I bought my Shimano bike shoes three years ago and they are as snug and comfortable today as the day I bought them.  No need to replace them.

However, they are getting really dirty/shabby looking and they STINK!  Can I throw them in the washing machine?  How do I properly take care of them?

Put them in the top rack of your dishwasher w/o any dishes, remove the insoles, facing down, and wash with dish machine soap but do not dry them.

Put newspapers in them right after wards to absorb the water. If you are fortunate enough to have boot drier put them on that to dry. If you don't, do it on warm day you can put them in the sun that isn't humid or they will take longer to dry.

I wash my running shoes in the washing machine but not bike shoes.

I use the laundry tub with some soap and a touch of bleach, swish soak repeat a few times.  Drain the sudsy water, rinse shoes well, then refill the tub to dunk the shoes in clear water again.  Leave out to dry (though I never thought about the newspaper Kathy mentioned and may give that a try)

I use this method to keep my hockey equipment from getting nasty and it's always worked well for me, so that's why I tried it on my bike and running shoes.
