I don't think I underestimated the distance yesterday, but I definitely underestimated the hills on the bike.  I was barely moving on the uphill segments, and my legs were wrecked for the run.  I was DFL out of the water (49:57), DFL off the bike (3:53:28), and 1 of 9 people who didn't finish the run (I was on my 3rd lap of 4 when they told me that I wouldn't be allowed to finish my last lap since it would take me past the 7hr cutoff, so I ran the rest of the lap and was at 2:00 after 15.75km).  With transitions (the only place I wasn't DFL - I was 23rd OA out of 49 on T1 and 4th OA on T2), I finished my day 5.25km short, after 6:46.

I had a great experience, and I know that I only have my insufficient training to blame.  I can't wait to do it right next year!

Just wait until September 20th (my first attempt at a HIM).. I'll have a race report that will probably make you feel pretty good about your performance.  Laughing

How about throwing the heat into the equation?  I did the Olympic of the same race you did and the heat on the run was nasty!  I can't imagine doing what you did, congratulations on your accomplishment!

Thanks for the congrats.  Yeah, the heat was brutal.  Nice top 10 in the Olympic race!

You may have been DFL in parts of your HIM, but you are way ahead of many that would never even "dream" of standing at that starting line.

You know what you need to do, put in the work, and get it done next time!

I'm just curious, are your logs up to date?

Heh.  I feel you.  I just had a HIM yesterday where I had a great (for me) swim, good T1, and then collapsed at mile 53 of the bike from severe dehydration.  (It was 90 degrees, and I hadn't expected it to really heat up until the run so brought my usual hydration/nutrition.  Vomiting everything out at mile 46 didn't help.)  Like you, I'm already planning for next season.

Be proud of what you accomplished.  It's more than what 99% of the population did that day. :-)

I did a HIM 5 years ago where I passed out at mile 8 of the run (I had walked all 8 miles up to that point) and missed completing by the 5 short miles.

I did another HIM 6 months later... Although I was trained for the race, I was not trained for the heat or my nutritional issues, so what I learned was the longer races are all about a learning process.

Sign up for another one but give yourself plenty of time to train, work on the things that did not work for you (Hills, swimming) and get back out there.

The longer distances are harder to get everything right and so sometimes every race is a learning process...

I have a very fast friend who will do small races like sprints and Olys and target just the transitions as the thing he is working on getting faster and he does not worry about anything else. Or he will work on doing something specific in the swim or whatever...

Learn from the race,

They are Embarassed.  Like I said, I know that I didn't prepare nearly well enough.

A seven hour cutoff seems pretty stiff to me. Most I've seen are at least eight hours.

DFL  > DNF > DNS.

And even DNS is better than DNGOTFC (did not get off the couch).

You first race at a new distance is supposed to be a baseline that you measure all future performance against. Think of it as an excellent opportunity to set a 'Persoanl Best' time at your next HIM.
