Pre-race routine:

BIB #111

Woke at 0400 as usual and proceeded to get ready. The hotel denied any late checkouts so we spent a little extra time packing and getting the minor stuff situated.

Snacked on 2 granola bars and 1 cup of coffee. Took care of business. Sipped on water leading up to race start. Took a gu at the countdown of swimmers.
Event warmup:

Showed up on the course, set up transition area. Walked from swim exit, through transition, and out, getting situated of the directions.

Took the bike out for a bit of a spin to set the gears and check everything over. Good thing I did. Loose rear skewer was causing a terrible racket while riding.

Easy swim from the finish out to the last bouy and back. Felt comfortable.

Also, did a wee bit of practicing getting out of the shoes for the dismount going into T2.
Swim
  • 28m 38s
  • 1640 yards
  • 01m 45s / 100 yards
Comments:

Felt great on the swim. Made lots of passes in the first 550meters as I was trying to seperate the field. Rounded tight on the first bouy and held it close to the second bouy, still passing folks.

After starting the downstream section, I was alone. Lost all of the drafters and realized I was setting the pace. Felt smooth and comfortable throughout.

Maintained a 5 stroke breathing pattern on the upcurrent, and then dropped into a 3 stroke pattern on the downcurrent. Swam all the way to the swim exit until my fingers touched the bottom. Then stood to run for T1.

I really thought I was swimming faster than what the time shows.
What would you do differently?:

Consider changing out the goggles to a lighter color. Went with the shaded lenses (usual) but the skies turned overcast at the start. It made seeing the bouys a little difficult.
Transition 1
  • 00m 55s
Comments:

Really wanted to do the flying mount, but didn't feel comfortable with the limited practice I had. Instead I put on the shoes, ran with the bike, threw a leg over and went.

Still not a bad time. (6/18 were faster than me)
What would you do differently?:

Work on the flying mount
Bike
  • 1h 19m 40s
  • 24.85 miles
  • 18.72 mile/hr
Comments:

Edges of the roadway were spalling pretty bad causing rough vibrations.

Consumed 1 bottle (aero) of water, and 1 bottle gatorade (24oz). Took 1 gu roctane at mile 18.

Light misty rain toward the end of the ride, but managable. Hard winds, mostly headwind, with a few crosswinds just strong enough to push me/bike around.

Tried the "get out of the shoes and dismount barefooted" deal, which worked great. Added too much front brake though, and launched a water bottle at the timing mat.

Felt that the speed would have been higher, but I felt like I did a great job keeping it in check.
What would you do differently?:

Not launch a water bottle at the timing mat.
Transition 2
  • 01m 15s
Comments:

Smooth transition considering I put on socks for the run.
What would you do differently?:

Dismount faster.
Run
  • 1h 04m 52s
  • 6.21 miles
  • 10m 27s  min/mile
Comments:

Minor issue at 1.5mi - downed tree. Went to hurdle it and felt a twinge in the left hamstring. Tried to cramp up, but quick massage worked it out. Got back to running.

Potty break at mile 3.

Kept the pace managable and probably could've picked it up a bit. Worried about blowing up. At mile 5.5, turned it up and started trying to push it home.

Light sprinkle toward the finish of the race.
What would you do differently?:

Run harder.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked through the chute, grabbed a water, some fruit, coke, and a slice of pizza. Saw fellow finishers.

Stood in line at the massage tent (only 2 massuses) for 30min and finally got out of line after it wasn't moving.

Quickly packed up to beat the storm that was coming.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Worried about blowing up early and wanted to finish feeling strong.
