I've noticed that about 20-30min. into my run my hands start to swell. I was initially told it was from the beginnings of dehydration, that my body is trying to hold onto fluid at all costs. I started running with a fuel belt and started sipping water about 15min. into my run. It seemed to help for a few runs, then it noticed it again. It's been crazy hot down here so I thought maybe an electrolyte supplament might help. I started adding Nuun to my water after about the 30min. mark, but I still seem to occasionall notice the swelling. It doesn't happen all the time, even though all of my runs are pretty much at the same time of day(around noon-ish) at the same location (outside in a park). What is causing this?? If it's dehydration, why doesn't happen all the time? Any ideas?? Anyone else have this happen?

No way do you have symptoms of dehydration after 20-30 minutes unless you started off that way.

Are you carryin your hands low, like below your heart? My wife used to coach TNT walkers and one thing they were told was to pick their hands up over their heart when walking to prevent the blood from pooling there.

x2 - Especially the 2nd part.  I walked a marathon a few years ago and kept my hands at my sides, bad idea, major hand swelling.

I hold my hands quite high and it still happens, doc said it might be because I have low blood pressure and he didn't think it was anything to worry about.  I swell at the drop of a hat - ankles after a long day's hiking and my feet look like a couple of cane toads after a long flight. Is always worse when the weather is hot even when not exercising, so bad that I have  'summer' and  'winter' wedding rings.  Would be interested to see if others have had advice on this, cheers for posting.

My hands almost always swell when I run...somedays my fingers look like little sausages!  Been doing that for 15 years.  Never thought to be concerned about.  Maybe I should be?

ETA:  thought about it, nah...not going to worry about it.
