Subject: 1st OLY....GUs and Water
1st OLY on Sunday.  I plan on 1 GU before Swim and 1 during run.  Also, 1 bottle of water/gatorade on bike and water at aid stations.  Is this enough?  I plan on 2.5 hrs to complete. Thanks.

That's about what I use and it works for me.  I take one bottle of water and one of some sports drink.  I also have my second gel on the bike (in the last 5 miles) so that it has time to get into my system before the run.

Sounds reasonable, but how does that mesh with what you have done in training? Nothing new on race day, yada yada.

 

I think I went with one at the start of the bike and one near the end. Easier for me to gel on the bike than on the run.

also going to do you more good than say half way through the run when you feel you need it, sorta too late then.



To the OP, i normally do one right before the start, half a bottoe of water/sports drink/whatever i put in my bottle that day.

maybe half a cup on the run, bu more than likely its jsut going over my head.

I take my 2nd gel on the Oly bike ~3/4 the way through it and use water only.  I don't like to run with a fresh gel in my stomach.  I'll do water/G'rade on the run aid stations.

Same as Donto! If you take the 2nd one within the final 5 or 6 miles of the bike, that should last you through the run -- especially if you are planning on 2.5 hours. A 2:30 oly usually requires a fairly brisk run, and so any deficits you are flirting with between that second gel and the finish can be filled with whatever energy-type fluid (HEED, Gatorade, et al) is on course.
