So I went riding at about midnight around the park. It has a nice oval of just under one mile that has trees to divide the oval into two (outside for walking, jogging, strollers, etc.), and the inside (wider specifically for bicycling - well marked). I stay in the park when my gut tells me, especially at that hour.

I'm now doing a decent clip (HR read 25mph), when I'm approaching three joggers, side by side, going in the same direction taking up almost the entire bike lane. I briefly blew a whistle I carry with me to warn them of my coming up to them. I moved completely to the right and sped by them, when the one closest to me screams at the top of his lungs and yells "HOLY SHEET, YOU SCARED THE F#$) OUT OF ME".

Next time around he is looking for me and purposely tries to throw me off so I stop ready to put my cleat where his teeth are. I let him vent about how I scared him and I should slow down. I pointed out where the markers are stating I'm in the right and had warned them with the whistle and was far enough that even if he tripped and fell to my side we would still not make contact (his friends stayed back). I could tell he really wanted to go for it but he knew he was going to lose without his buddies. I continued with my work out, they stayed as well without further incident (I laugh to myself everytime I think of his initial reaction, I'm sure his buddies do too).

Should I have slowed down as well and make sure there was no way ole' scaredy-cat could not possibly miss me? There were only about 8 people in the entire huge park and THEY were on the bike lane.

Take a taser with you next time and just shock him instead of using your whistle. That should do the trick.

No, I think you did everything you could to warn them. I know sometimes people surprise me on narrow paths when I can't see behind me, but I try to be courteous and leave room for others to pass, and there might always be people coming up beind.

This reminds me of this one time in college in Daytona Beach, my roommate and I were riding in a bike lane, at night, in the pitch dark, going pretty fast. Haded to a party at a friends house, going probably 20mph or so. Stupid, but we were stupid college kids. He's in front and I'm right on his wheel when *WHAM*. We plow head on into these two guys that were running (in the bike lane) toward us. SInce there were no lights on this road, and no cars, it was pitch black and we didn't see them until we hit them, practically. We were pretty beat up...lotsa road rash and plenty of bruises the next day. Don't really know how the runners faired, because we pretty much just got back on our bikes and limped to the party, where the pain was killed by this horrible drink we used to make by emptying bottles of vodka, a 2-liter of Sprite and a couple of cans of frozen limeade into a cooler with ice. BUt that's another story...

WOW Two guys and two bikers head on. That had to hurt for everyone. I'm sure the runners got the brunt of the force due to the bikes as well as the bodies hitting them.

Glad you and your roomie were nuthing but bruised.

Now for the drinks. Sprite and vodka???

Don't forget the frozen limeade. We were young and stupid...what can I say? It was pretty good, though...
