Subject: Lake Carroll Oly & Sprint, Sept 19th?
There was a thread for this race last year, for the race's inaugural run, but it seems that they've changed a lot of things since then--later start, new courses, new director and organizers. I'm doing the sprint...anyone else in for either distance?

I'm thinking about doing the sprint also. Is the bike course hilly? There is not much detailed information on their site.

A little further down the list than most people check...

nice race if you don't mind rolling hills for the bike course.

I am doing the olympic.

We have a group of around 10 to 15 doing the event.  Most of us are newbies just going out to have fun.

The course is a fun one.  The bike route changed a bit, get to go down an even bigger hill then last year.  35 just coasting, 40 mph no problem if you peddle.

My parents have property out there . . . lake is starting to cool off but in 2 the temp will still be perfect!

I have a long ride in my plan for sunday (19th) but I may blow it off and come do this race instead, I rely enjoyed the rolling hills bike course last year.

Anyone know anybody that would be interested in the run or bike portions of the event?

I have a friend that is 80 years old that would love to do the swim but needs the other two parts of the relay.  I have gone through my list of contacts and am having a hard time finding a person (or two).

My friend would prefer the Olympic but I could probably talk him into the Sprint if that was more agreeable to you.

We could probably help with cost as well.

Let me know ASAP.

Thanks -

Brian

Back at you Alex.

Anyone else doing the event?  Talking with the organizer they have over 160 signed up as of earlier this week.

Brian, any word on the lake temp? I'm trying to decide if a wetsuit will be necessary for the sprint.

If last year was anything to go by, there was quite a few people that went without, but I'd take it with you and decide on race morning.

My husband and I are doing this race.  It will be our first!  We went out there 2 weeks ago and biked the course.  There are so many hills.  I don't think there is any flat areas Brian - you said there is a bigger hill than last year.  If it's where I'm thinking, isn't there a 90 degree turn at the bottom of the hill?

I hope it's not raining or wet.  That course will be a little dangerous to do if the roads are wet.  (At least for me ... I don't like going too fast dwon the hills especially if it's wet)

Very cool everyone. . .

The big hill will be on Old Wharf Road.  You will do a left turn on this street from Grandview.  You will easily hit 35 just coasting down this hill.  And then depending on how good your legs feel that is when you hit the big hill (I would be surprised to be at 4 mph at parts of it. .  . if you are an awesome biker I would think 8 is probably the best you could maintain - not me).

There are actually a few good straight areas (believe it or not) between rolling hills.  For example, when you enter the complex you should be able to maintain over 20 without much effort from there constant to the marina (around a four mile leg).

For me the corner that is most "dangerous" would be when you go by a place called trail side inn.  As you leave the complex and go onto a county road there could be a bit of gravel in that area.  So be careful.  Other then that generally it is pretty smooth.  For those going around the lake twice watch the pot holes by the marina.  Stay in the middle of the road if you can as if you stay on the right there are some rolling pot holes (hard to see them as they are really just indentations).

I won't know water temp till tomorrow but if you shoot me your email I can send it to you from my phone.  From years of water skiing out there I would guess that you will be looking at somewhere between 68 and 72 based on what we have had for weather.

It should be a fun race!  It will be "neat" to see how we all feel after leaving T2 and running up a nice sized hill . . . .

See everyone soon!

The boat was marking 64 degrees last Saturday.  I make no promises of the accuracy, but it was cold just in a swimsuit.  Bring the wetsuits!

Thanks for the update Baron.

What's your lot and section number out there?  You into waterskiing?  We were thinking of adding a fourth event and hitting the water before the tri. . . .

Anyways. ..  I hope everyone has a great race (and weekend)!

Just checked the weather--55 and rainy at race start!! Still only 60 degrees by noon. This will be my first cooler weather tri (the other two were hot and I only raced in my swimsuit). I think I am going to bring the wetsuit, even though I'm nervous about getting it off. I've been practicing, but I still am envisioning worst case scenarios where everyone who I worked to stay ahead of on the swim passes me as I struggle with the suit over my behemoth calves.  My next wetsuit will certainly have zippers on the lower legs! I'm not sure what to wear underneath--I don't own a tri suit. Just bike shorts, I guess? And my wetsuit is a sleeveless, so I suppose I'll just wear my swimsuit under it and put something else on in T1.

So speaking of that, what are you going to bring to wear on the bike leg? I've heard it can be ridiculously difficult to get a long sleeved shirt on over wet arms in T1. Any tips or advice?

proly too late to get one, but a tri top and shorts would be ideal.

I'll be volunteering not racing, but I would still be going with a sleeveless tech top (tri top) under the wet suit.

WOW!!!!!  So that's what "rolling" means on a bike course, huh? That was...um...interesting. Definitely challenging. I don't think I've ever had my quads feel like that at any point through my 17 year competitive running career!

Good job on the 2nd over all and 1st in age group placing, have you seen any final posting on the race yet?  I have never climbed so many hills in my life.  Lot to work on before I try it again.  Need to find out the definition of rolling hills before I enter another one with that discription.

Thanks The first place woman was much more skilled than me on the bike!! I was such a chicken and braked all the way down some of those curvy downhills. I don't think I ever let myself go above 35 mph or I started feeling wobbly and scared of the wet pavement, and whether any cars were lurking around those blind turns. I hope some day to race with confidence and courage like hers.

What did you think of the bike racks? I think I bent my rear derailleur hanger in trying to get my bike out of the tangled mess of pedals and cranks, and had some shifting problems up the hills. Too many bikes per rack, I thought.

I looked all over for the results but I haven't found them anywhere yet. I'll let you know if I see them.

Good job to everyone who stuck out that weather!!

Got the results,  came in 39th.  This is my second outdoor race and now know what I need to work on.  More saddle time and miles.  got the swim down to a decent time but nothing can prepare you for hills unless you train on them.

A couple of us actually moved to a bike rack in the back of the staging area because of the tight area's.  Made for easy in and out, just have to work on doing it faster.

See ya at the next one.
