southwestmba - 2010-09-07 10:51 PM Guilty. After getting absolutely smoked by my first HIM and walking about 12 of 13 miles, I said to my self there is no way in H$$$, I could ever do a full IM. A few months later I signed up for IMFL and have done 1 a year since. Fortunately, prior to the full I did get the opportunity to return to the first HIM and exercize (or is it exercise) those demons by beating my time by about 50 min and getting a bit of confidence going into IMFL.

Exorcise.  Just FYI!

I was in Lake Placid in 2004 during race week. I had run pretty consistently just to stay in shape and had done a couple of 10ks at that point. All the cool bikes, people running, swimming, etc, piqued my interest. I checked into it and learned about the different distances. I certainly had no intention of doing an IM. Like others, I though that kind of distance was freaking insane. I considered a 1/2 doable, but more than enough. But after I crossed the finish line I thought: I just finished a half Ironman. Next thought: Yeah? So what?

Like others, I toed the line in Lake Placid in 2006, again in Arizona in 2007, and will be there once more at IMTX in 2011.

Two reasons for me, time required for trainin and not excited about running ANY marathon.  Doing a HIM in 3 days... I'm not saying never either, it just isn't on the radar right now.

Currently training for the Swim/Bike portion of an IM and the time for that is too much.  Combine that with my knee surgery which would require me to walk a significant portion of the run and I don't think I want to do a full IM.  But I have to admit the voices in my head keep tempting me!

No desire to to compete in a IM at all.

Enjoy doing sprints where I don't have to worry about nutrition, hydration, or anything else but going all out for about an hour or so.

I never thought I'd do one...did a HIM in '08 and was content. All it took was watching the finish line of IMFL and a little seed was planted...hmmmm...maybe I can do that. I figured I'd try to register online the next day but it would be sold out or I wouldn't be able to get thru.  I finished IMFL last year and would love to do another one day ~ my husband told me if I did another one it would be as a single parent. ouch. guess Im done.

I know that I could do it... that I'm capable of doing anything... however, I also know that I'm not willing to sacrifice my family and health to prove a point. I've done multiple century rides. I've done multiple solo centuries. I can swim the distances with no problems... but the running will always get me injured. Knowing that limitation, I do what I can and will now limit my racing to Oly's at the most and sprints usually.

yup. it's the run for me too. I'll never run a marathon because I just don't like running for that long so an IM is not going to happen. however I am doing iron man 70.3 boulder next year and there was a time in the past when I said I would never do that distance either, so.....

Many years ago, I thought people who did a tri, any distance, were nuts.  I said I would and couldn't do one of those.  Did my first sprint 3 years ago.  At that point said, I could never do that long stuff like a HIM or IM.  This year, I completed one HIM and will do my second HIM on Sunday.  I'm also signed up for IMCDA in 2011.  I guess I'm "nuts."

No where does it say you have to 'run' the 26.2 miles....

I haven't done one... and I never will.

Bold statement I know.. but it's true. I did a Half Ironman in 2008... during the run, I realized I wasn't having fun and really missed my family (who were camping with me that weekend) and I just wanted it to be over. I know for a fact that my body would not take the abuse from the training, and the racing would probably finish me.

For me, I've proven my self, and I don't need to do anymore. I can call myself a triathlete... and that is what I set out for myself... nothing more needs to be proven.

I'm the same way--if I do one, if will not be in the near future. My kids are little (2yo and almost 4yo), and I can't spend the time away from them right now. Give it 15y, and I might! As it is, I hope to do a HIM next year.

coreyasaur - 2010-09-07 10:11 PM Don't know.  I've got 6 marathons under my belt, and they've all been painful.  Can't imagine running that distance after the swim and bike!

Shhh!!!!!  I'm trying to forget the fact that a marathon is painful!!!  (59 days to florida!)

I can imagine it...but so far I've only successfully run about 16 and 14.5 miles of my two IM marathons...

I am just the opposite. In high school I remember watching the first Ironman on Wide World of Sports. I remember seeing Julie Moss stumble and fall near the finish. I can still remember the commentators talking about the athletes pushing so hard that they lose control of their bodily functions. I thought that would be the true test of mental and physical toughness. I said that one day I would be an Ironman. I did not consider that I did not know how to swim and hated running. I started training 3 years ago and my first Iron distance race is Sunday.

Wow...good luck to you!  I hope you fill out a race report so I can read about your experience!  A three year goal coming to fruition.  That's awesome!

Well I grew up swimming and I too remember seeing Kona on Wide World of Sports---I remember thinking well the swim would be easy, I could probably train to ride 112 BUT I hate running/can't run so guess I'll never do a tri-----this was probably 20+ years ago when I was early-teen and didn't realize there was any other distance tri.......didn't think about it till a couple years ago when a couple guys I work with did a sprint---I looked into it and thought well I can run those distances but not an IM.  So I did a sprint and then signed up for my second tri---a HIM....talking to the guy I work with and I remember saying to him that I'd never do a full because of the marathon-----BUT I remember thinking as soon as those words came out of my mouth (I can tell you exactly where we were when I said those words....) that I WOULD do a full---that was '08....'09 I did B2B full............

This is a great topic!  I said the same thing as everyone.  I got into the sport last year and did just sprints.  This summer I did 3 sprints and became very competitive and just completed my first OLY.  I used to say those HIM are crazy but now I have the itch to do a HIM in April of next year.  The only issue I have is the training.  I really do not like training and as a young married guy with a toddler and I am sure more are on the way, I frankly do not have time to train. I have always been a very good athlete so I have always just trained a little and went out there and did the race whether is was a tri or a half marathon.  Other than my our of swimming, biking, or running at my gym on my lunch break and an occassional long run on a weekend, there is no other time for me?  But getting into the HIM and IM distance, I know unless you are  trained you can really hurt yourself as you get into these very long distances.  Unfortuantely my itch is too much so I will probably just try the HIM next year.  I do not see myself doing an IM, but who knows????

I never quite understood why someone would want to swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and run 26.2 miles just to end up in the same place. Yet, here I am doing triathlons.

I thought I had a two year plan to do an Ironman (this is year one). I have pushed that back to maybe year three. IMTX? Although, if Kona called, I might have to ramp up my trainingSmile.

I can remember when I would run 5ks thinking that running 5 miles seemed long. Then seeing IM on tv for the first time I was intrigued but thought it was insane. Now 3 IM's and 18 other marathons later I guess maybe I might be on those insane people. So yeah never!

I used to say that Marathons are not for me and the longest i'd run would be a half marathon, and now 4 years and several marathons later, i cannot wait to do an IM

Everyone comes around eventually!  Just takes a bit longer for some.

Good luck in 2011!

20?  10?  5?  years ago sitting on a couch smoking Winstons, No I would never do anything like that.  Stupid people out RUNNING at 05:00 are they crazy?

A few sprints and an olympic distance (all painfully slow) and I keep thinking that pushing the distance is my own definintion of endurance.  Trying to find a HIM next summer as the next goal and the voices are already in chorus about staying off the couch enough to finish a full IM.
