I'm gearing up for my 1st race and I've have been combatting ear infections that occur every 2-3 weeks during the past 2 months. Any suggestions in reducing the infection and speeding up recovery besides lots of vitamin C, zinc and antibiotics?

are yu sure its swimmer's ear? does it hurt when you pull your ear lobe? try using a mix of white vinegar and alcohol after you swim that works for me. i sometimes get swimmer's ear when i swim in a lot of different pools in few days but sometimes my ear hurts on the inside and doesn't hurt when i pull on my ear lobe then i take sudafed or dimatapp because it is congestion inside my ear not swimmer's ear.

So, have you been to the doctor?  What kind of ear infection are we talking about?  Swimmers ear is an infection of the ear canal, and once it is healed with antibiotic ear drops it can usually be prevented by keeping it dry with a product like "Swimmers Ear".  This is often a frquent problem with OW swimmers.  If it is a middle ear infection then you need to take the antibiotics as your doc recommends and then you should have no problem being in the water as long as your ear drum has not ruptured.  Hope this helps, but if you have any questions be sure to talk to your doctor.

I also always get swimmers ear. When I asked my doctor about it last Fall, he said I would grow out of it. (I am 26). So I started swimming with earplugs. The ones that look like screws hurt my ears, so I use the Macks wax ones that don't go in your ears, just seal up the outside. No ear infections since.

I get swimmers ear like other people get a stubbed toe! There is a product on the market, and I cannot remember the name, but I think it is called Swimmers Ear. Anyway you pop it in after you swim and, for me, it has made all the difference. I literally get it in the shower, literally.

between swimming and teaching swim lessons i always got ear infections and swimmers ear, the best bet besides seeing a doc and get the meds, is keeping your ears dry as much as possible, cause the longer they stay wet, the more time the bactria can grow, my doc told me to use a low blow dryer setting and hold it arms length away to help dry out the ear.
