Sprint_DA - 2010-09-08 8:07 AM You live in St. Louis, your outdoor riding season should easily go into December and start again in February.  I went to Southern Illinois this February to get back into outdoor riding.

Good point. Thanks for interjecting some reality into my life. Laughing Three months does'nt seem so bad. This will be my first winter riding so I can just bundle up, but you also have daylight or lack of daylight to deal with.

I just wonder how many tmes I can watch the movie "300" this winter.

And for daylight, Serfas just released a new light than puts out 250 lumens, charges off of a USB cable, and doesn't cost much.  I don't work for them, but I do work at a bike shop...and we geek out about things like that.

I'm reclaimng my mtn bike from my brother, giving it a good overhaul, maybe upgrading come components and plan to hit the trails and snowy roads this winter.  I have a drainer, but damn it drives me crazy!

X2 on the strength training too!

StlPhil - 2010-09-07 9:09 PM I bought a bike trainer awhile back and was really excited. Used it a few times, but I have gotten hooked on cycling outdoors. I got on the trainer tonight for a hour and realized this is going to be brutal! 4-5 months of training in my family room. I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to do it. Any tips or tricks to survive the winter without going nuts?

Get cold weather gear and bike outdoors. Ice/snow/freezing rain, single digit temps, and darkness are about the only things that keep me indoors. I will ride during lunch sometimes, and definitely on the weekends. Still end up on the trainer but not every ride.

For the trainer you need a focus, just getting on and riding like you can in the great outdoors just doesn't cut it.  Something like the Winter Cycling Plan workouts are a great way to spend a measly hour dying in front of a fan! Laughing

BTW awesome job on the weight loss!

Looking forward to it! I don't have to worry about the heat!  I used to not mind training in 100 + degree heat but after a few injuries I won't train in those temps anymore.

That is cool and my first thought was "I need that!".  However, they really should have just put fenders on it.  Any good winter bike has fenders, so now I need to mess around and get my own = PITA.   Love the tires, though.

I'm scheduled to do the B2B iron-distance tri (early Nov.). THIS means, continuing to ride through September/October. I'm not liking the idea. I have always thought of tri's & tri training as a summer/warm whether/sunny sport. Any thoughts (OK... I'm looking for some inspiration like the OP).

Every single day that I can ride in the Fall without having ice/snow is motivating to me...  Just think of your poor BT friends in the Great White North.   You just need a few extra layers of clothes, you'll be fine.

rowdypaint - 2010-09-07 10:29 PM   played Wii while on the trainer.  Wii bowling is kind of fun; do sprint intervals while the other person is bowling.  I can also play MarioKart on the trainer, but I feel silly when I find myself speeding up my cadence to try to go faster.  Doh!

Man... and I thought being able to play xbox on the trainer was impressive... wii is an entirely new level!

Winter is great to break out of the same old SBR routine. If you haven't tried it, give cross country skiing a go, either classic or freestyle. 1 hour over rolling terrain will make anything on the trainer seem like a recovery ride.

Especially in South Carolina!  (I wish we had snow.  Sometimes.)

Face mask, gloves, Windstopper bib w/ windstopper jacket, wool socks, neoprene shoe covers, lights for the shorter days.

I'll hit the trainer too, but the above will keep me on the road longer and let me get out there sooner.  HTFU.

I concur on winter being a SBR break. Add to cross country skiing, hot dogs & movies!
