United States
Sunny
Total Time = 3h 25m 29s
Overall Rank = 176/1148
Age Group = 25-29
Age Group Rank = 32/68
Pre-race routine:

Woke up and had some breakfast. Caught the bus to Ouray and took care of picking up my shirt and such.
Event warmup:

Jogged 2 minutes to the start line, was running a bit late. Found myself at the back of a sea of people... tried to snake through to seed myself better while I still had time.
Run
  • 3h 25m 29s
  • 17.1 miles
  • 12m 01s  min/mile
Comments:

Did a lot of passing at the beginning, should have seeded myself further up. Kept a good pace the first 6 miles, little walking unless the trail narrowed and everyone was getting blocked in. The grade steadily increased so I switched between walking and running depending on how steep it got. About mile 8 it was mostly walking, grade increased to 22% for several parts, killer hills! Spent some time at the top, had a cookie and some Gatoraid and had the volunteers take some pictures of me (to come later!). Started down the mountain which was also very steep. About half a mile down I passed a mountain biker who was letting everyone know what place they were in, he told me I was in 114th! I was thrilled to hear that, I had no idea how I was doing. I kept up a very fast pace but trying to stay in control, lots of loose rocks made it very difficult. After only a mile my heels started burning... ugh! I knew I was starting to get blisters on both feet (ended up with 5 total), tried to focus on landing on my toes but noticed my speed was decreasing. Tried to maintain the best pace I could but got passed by 60 people on the way down, frustrating but I still beat my time goal which I was very happy about. Great race!

OA Finish: 144 1:06:53
What would you do differently?:

Practice more hill training. Get some tighter fitting shoes.
Post race
Warm down:

Collapsed on the bench just past the finish line

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Blisters!!! And I'm not very good at running downhill

Event comments:

WOW! What an amazingly beautiful course! Very well organized and well staffed, tons of volunteers, lots of fun. Hope to be back next year!
