Subject: What's the deal with Zipp Wheels?
Hi all, I was talking with some other triathletes yesterday who are thinking of renting Zipp Wheels for a HIM we're doing next month. They swore they gave you a 3 mph boost! I had no idea it was something that significant. I'm not a fast rider by any means, and I have no delusions of winning any races, but I'm intrigued by the 3mph improvement for my HIM.  Not really for overall time improvement, but really just less time in the saddle for the bike, which is my weakest event. If I can save my legs for running, well, I'd like to.  Anyone out there have experience with Zipp Wheels and can validate how much it can improve your speed?

Thank you!
Heather

NOT 3mph.

Maybe 40 seconds to a minute over 40k (off the cuff).

Kido - 2010-09-13 2:56 PM NOT 3mph.

Maybe 40 seconds to a minute over 40k (off the cuff).

Oh, that is totally not worth the 100 bucks to rent them then. Thank you!

Not so fast; don't forget about the cool quotient. Those wheels look and sound way cool.

ETA - no pun intended

Definately not 3 mph, unless the previous wheel set was crap.  Zipps and other high end aero wheels will give some extra speed and/or less power to do the same thing.  Numbers are relative as to what wheel set you are replacing them with and the ability of the rider.  The windtunnel numbers are quoted by Kido, which is a good referance.  They do give some advantage whether it is aero, weight, and quality of hub, but that increase is minimized if you are trading the zipps for another good set of race wheels.

they'd probably give you close to 3mph....
if you were averaging 32 mph without them.

But 3mph is more like the difference between a road bike and a tricked out TT bike.
I've read some studies that claim an aero helmet (for 1/10th the price of zipps) will give you the same drag reduction.  (excluding the cool factor)

I can rock spandex all day long, but I still can't bring myself to show up to a race on a cyclocross bike with an aero helmet even though I've seen the drag reduction studies.

That's because it's tough to do beer handups while rockin an aero bucket.

Numerous threads on this subject. Some people will say "they gain nothing" and some will say "3 minutes" and both are highly unlikely. The general rule of thumb is that aero wheels will gain you 40-60 seconds in a 40K TT which is 24 miles, meaning in a 56 mile HIM you gain 80 to 120 seconds. That's your bell curve.

To some people, that's well worth $100 or more. To others, it's not.

Thanks for all the replies!  It's nice to be able to tap into everyone's experiences and expertise.  Right now I'm thinking it's just not worth it for me to put the money into a few minutes gain--despite the cool factor .

Put the 100 bucks into a rear wheel cover, and then just rent a front Zipp 404 or beg/borrow one from a friend.
