Overall Rank = 5/
Age Group = 30-39 Clydes.
Age Group Rank = 3/
Pre-race routine:

Arrived at race site at 0645h by bus due to road closuers for the race.
Event warmup:

Ran for about 10 minutes to try and get warm. Lubed up bike, checke tire pressure. Got changed and went to the marshalling area for the heat.
Swim
  • 27m 3s
  • 1500 meters
  • 01m 48s / 100 meters
Comments:

Not my best effort in the water. Couldn't get comfortable. Wasn't able to get into the groove. It really felt like I had to work to damn hard to get anywhere out there. My shoulder still isn't 100% (maybe 75%?). Couldn't see anyone to draft off of, the water clarity was that bad.
What would you do differently?:

I dunno. I need more pool time but I need to balance that with recovery for the shoulder.
Transition 1
  • 00m
Comments:

Good T1. I think I was just happy to be out of the water, and ready to make up ground on my strength.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Good T1.
Bike
  • 1h 10m 32s
  • 40 kms
  • 34.03 km/hr
Comments:

A good ride. The wind was hell though (30-60kph). Whenever you went over the bridge, the bike would start bucking around and you really had to be aware. I heard that one competetor even got blown into the divider on the bridge and crashed out. Not cool. I felt strong and made up some time here.
It was frustrating that people cannot learn to stay on the left. I had to pass at least 4 or 5 people on the right b/c they were hugging the lines. You call out to them, but with all the wind, they couldn't hear. And it just got worse as the laps went on and more people were on course. It sucks being forced to pass on the right going 65kph when there's nowhere else to go.
What would you do differently?:

Nothing. Good, solid ride.
Transition 2
  • 00m
Comments:

Had a bit of a brain fart racking the bike. Couldn't get it on the rack at first, too a couple of seconds....duh...
Speed lace on the right shoe wouldn't grab at first, had to stop after about 100m and re-adjust it.
What would you do differently?:

Rack the bike properly.
Run
  • 47m 6s
  • 10 kms
  • 04m 43s  min/km
Comments:

Ok run, took about 1.5k to get comfortable. First 1.5 laps I ran in at a comfortable pace, and then decided I needed to try and make up some more time. Pushed up the pace, and then really ran the last 1.5k hard.
What would you do differently?:

Overall okay. Maybe kick a little sooner.
Post race
Warm down:

Walked for about 10 min, got some poweraide and water down. Then straight to the massage tent.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My swim sucked. Plain and simple.

Event comments:

This is a well organized event that flows really well. My only complaint is how slow they are on posting results.
It was cool sticking around for the ITU pro race after and watching the pros and how they light it up! Took tons of pictures.

Very good race I must say.
You have to be pleased getting the bronze!
I wish my swim was that good!
You must have been flying on the bike.
Can't wait to see the official times and see where you placed on the bike.
Run looks good.
Keep it up!

Awesome race! I used to live in Edmonton and didn't realize that people actually swim in Hawerlack Park - learn something new every day. You should be very happy with your results - 3rd in your age group and 5th overall - I would have to say that you totally rock!

What a great race,  awesome swim time! And with a sore shoulder,  I'm impressed.

I've had that same brain fart trying to rack my bike.  My body just couldn't coordinate itself!

Congrats on the placings!  Well done!   Go team 10s!!

Hey Brent,

Great race. From the results on the website, it looks like you were 1st overall on the bike for the Cyldes. Great result.

The rest of your race went well too and you were able to maintain a good speed on the run. Congratulations on the bronze.

Jen
