Age Group Rank = 3/28
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 4:35, ate my normal race breakfast (bagel with PB&J washed down with Ultragen). Nice to be able to drive less than an hour to a HIM.
Event warmup:

Swam (or should that be waded) the last three buoys of the swim exit so I could practice sighting. Hung around in the water until my wave went off.
Swim
  • 34m 34s
  • 2112 yards
  • 01m 38s / 100 yards
Comments:

Tide was very low so there was a great deal of wading at the start and the end. I suspect this actually helped my swim time. Also it felt like there was some current pushing us back in to the exit which probably helped.
What would you do differently?:

Despite near perfect conditions and easy course I found myself on the outside of the course and probably added 20-30 secs to my swim time. Sight better I guess!
Transition 1
  • 01m 23s
Comments:

1st / 50th fastest. I had a pretty good transition spot so that helped my time a little. Used the wetsuit strippers which were great.
What would you do differently?:

Not much
Bike
  • 2h 35m 33s
  • 56 miles
  • 21.60 mile/hr
Comments:

Although I was a few watts under my power target I was pretty pleased with the ride. When I'd ridden the course the previous weekend I suspected it would be about 10-12 mins slower than Tupper Lake, but in the end I was only about 6 mins off that time.

First time I'd raced with an aero helmet and found it to be fine - of course the weather was perfect as little chance to overheat
What would you do differently?:

Push a little harder, particularly on the initial climbs on the first 10 miles or so
Transition 2
  • 01m 48s
Comments:

7th / 195th fastest. As my major focus is training for NYC marathon I decided to avoid speed laces and also wear socks to avoid any potential blister issues. As I rarely race in socks I'm not that quick at getting them on and this cost me a fair amount of time in transition
What would you do differently?:

Run without socks as normal
Run
  • 1h 52m 25s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 08m 35s  min/mile
Comments:

I'd only run the first 3-4 miles of the course previously so did not really know what to expect, apart from the comments I'd read from other race reports. This course is exactly what I hate, trails, climbs and descents, but it made up for it by being one of the prettiest run courses I've ever been on.
What would you do differently?:

As always on the run, I finished feeling like I could have pushed harder, but who knows. This was a HIM PB run for me and given the challenging course I was very happy with it
Post race
Warm down:

Pizza and massage

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Heavy run volume in recent weeks meant I wasn't as rested as I could have been but

Event comments:

Considering this race is only three years old and has doubled in size each year I think it is very impressive how Richard Izzo and the team have got it working so smoothly. Definitely on my list for next year.
