Pre-race routine:

This was my second IMoo so everything was pretty routine. Got up at 3:30 and ate a small breakfast. Mixed up my bottles and headed down. Got to the terrace at 5:15 and setup. Everything went very smoothly.
Event warmup:

Lots of chatting with friends and family.
Swim
  • 1h 04m 36s
  • 4224 yards
  • 01m 32s / 100 yards
Comments:

I got in the water about 1 minute before the gun went off. I had been chatting with friends on the way down the helix and then to the start. I should have gotten there sooner. This was the same time I got last year. I started from the front on the far right. There wasn't too much budging. Overall I am happy with the swim.
What would you do differently?:

Get to the start sooner.
Transition 1
  • 08m 24s
Comments:

Run up the helix went fine. Stripped fine.
The volunteers couldn't find my bag and then I didn't have a volunteer to help. Had a wee bit o trouble getting my bike out of the rack. Time was 3 minutes slower than last year.
Bike
  • 5h 46m 3s
  • 112 miles
  • 19.42 mile/hr
Comments:

Felt really good during the whole bike. I got penalized 4 minutes for drafting with about 6 other guys. I found the hills to be super easy this year. Overall time was 2 minutes slower than last year.
What would you do differently?:

nothing
Transition 2
  • 03m 36s
Comments:

I think this was pretty fast
Run
  • 5h 09m 32s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 11m 49s  min/mile
Comments:

I felt great coming out of T2 and was holding a 9 minute pace for about 6 miles. Then I started to cramp up. I then realized I didn't have my electrolytes with me. By the time I was at mile 10 I was in walk/run/survival mode and cramping really bad in my legs. Mile 11 I was puking everything I tried to drink. I knew my goal times were out the window and just concentrated on surviving. I was fighting with my stomach for the rest of the race. Chicken broth was pretty much all I could hold, my stomach wanted nothing to do with that Perform crap anymore.

I saw a whole lot of people I knew out there and was stopping and chatting with a few. I was able to run the last 3 miles in without a cramp and people were screaming my name as I was coming around the capital.

I was caught at the finish line by two buddies from my riding group who are both Kona qualifiers this year. Too cool. They kept asking if I was ok. They said I looked like I was drunk. My legs were completely trashed from fighting the cramping for 15 miles. I found my wife, mom, kids and a bunch of friends and took pictures and ate Hohos.
What would you do differently?:

I will figure this out one of these years.
Post race
Warm down:

Family left and I hung out with Anne for a bit to see KTPitbull and scraps come in.

Event comments:

Love, love, love this race. The crowd was at a much higher energy level than last year due to the weather being more pleasant. I was not able to sign up for next year but will volunteer and be ready to go in 2012.

Even though my time did not live up to my expectations, I am very happy with this race. I had a blast and that's all that matters.

Great attitude!  For a guy who had a tough run, you still have a really good time!
