Set a timer for 12 minutes and do as many kettlebell swings as you can. The men in the study use only a 16 kg kettlebell. The study did not include women, but I would bet that a 12 kg kettlebell would be plenty for this workout. I would bet that you'd see results with an 8 kg KB, especially if you're a beginner.

Don't be fooled by the light weight (16 kg) and short amount of time (12 minutes). My weightlifting coach once had another lifter who wanted to improve his cardio for hockey do a similar workout. With a 16 kg KB, his goal was to swing continuously for 10 minutes. He could switch hands every minute (two-handed swings tend to be awkward for bigger guys). He made it the whole 10 minutes but was toasted at the end. To put this in perspective, this guy could snatch about 100 kg and clean and jerk probably upwards of 120 kg - and a 16 kg KB did him in. I joined him in the middle of the workout and lasted a whole 4 minutes. The key is to swing continuously for as long as possible. If you need to rest, keep it at a minimum.

How did the swings go Nick?  I really love kb swing workouts like this.  12 minutes is an eternity swinging though!

Don't let your grip fatigue

Thanks, I've been looking for good reasons to use my kettlebell as an AM workout.

I came up a with a potentially off-base reason of my own... thinking they will help with my snowboarding (was getting some fatigue in my hips while riding, and the kettlebell swing movement is fairly similar).

This is great!!!!! Swings are so deceptively hard. I have gone through periods where I'll aim for 200/day (100 in the AM, 100 in the PM). Takes very little time, but is so freakin' effective!

That's pretty good. What size kettlebell are you using?

If I'm feeling inspired, I'll use my 16kg, but I will typically use my 12kg for this. When I was being REALLY good about it, I had one sitting right next to my bike trainer. I'd warm up with 100 swings, then do another 100 when I was done with my workout. AWESOME way to get the swings in!!!!

Note to self: Carry kettlebell down to basement and set next to bike.

I did this today.  Used my 8kg kettlebell because it's been at least nine months since I've touched it.  Lasted eight minutes...  I'll try again on Friday.

Was that continuous or did you take breaks? Either way, great job.

I stopped once to make an adjustment, but it was continuous otherwise.  It was hard.
