Overall Rank = 260/760

Age Group Rank = 42/82
Pre-race routine:

Woke up around 4am. Ate a bowl of shredded wheat over whole milk. Drove an hour and a half. Set up my transition area and proceeded to the start line.
Event warmup:

Got in the water and swam for a few minutes. The water was cold but not freezing. Quite a few entrants were sans wetsuits, which is totally nuts from my standpoint.
Swim
  • 17m 10s
  • 875 yards
  • 01m 58s / 100 yards
Comments:

I think I swam more than the listed distance. I found myself wandering quite a bit.
What would you do differently?:

I would stick to a method on sighting the bouy. I did a sort of random whenever I though I was getting off course bouy check. The result was me being off course by 20-30 yards followed by a very questionable correction. Good thing was I spent most of the swim by myself.
Transition 1
  • 03m 3s
Comments:

Pretty tame transition. No fancy leap on the bike and pedal while putting my shoes on.
What would you do differently?:

Follow a mental checklist on putting my gear on/off. I kinda scrambled to put my gear on and take my wetsuit the rest of the way off. I think practicing the process and going over it in my head would have helped a lot.
Bike
  • 35m 32s
  • 11 miles
  • 18.57 mile/hr
Comments:

I don't know what went wrong. I felt good on the bike and even passed quite a few racers with fancy tribikes. I pushed hard and attacked the climbs with vigor. However, 35 freakin minutes later I was off the bike and cramping up pretty bad. 35 freaking minutes! I damn near killed myself and I though I was cooking way faster than that!
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate! Eat something! Anything to prevent the hell of hamstring cramps that my run started with.
Transition 2
  • 02m 3s
Comments:

Holy cow hamstring cramps suck. Whoever you are Mr.Cliff Shot, you saved my bacon. Some extremely good Samaritan gave me a gel pack while observing my obvious difficulty in walking. A thousand thank yous!
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate and eat something. Get some quick draw lacing system for my F Lite 230PKs.
Run
  • 24m 22s
  • 3 miles
  • 08m 07s  min/mile
Comments:

Four times serious cramping. Had to stop each time to try and get my leg to unlock. After the fourth I slowed my pace a bit and waited for everything to settle down. The aforementioned gel pack and a cup of water seemed to help and by the end of the first mile I was running pretty good. By mile 2 I was back on track and by the finish I felt certain I could have pushed my pace from at least the halfway point.
What would you do differently?:

Hydrate and eat. Listen to my body more. Go No.2 before the race.
Post race
Warm down:

No stretching. Staggered over to the masseuse tent and collapsed on a massage table.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Poor hydration schedule. Didn't eat enough prior to and during race.

Event comments:

Very good competition with awesome people running it and participating. I highly recommend this event and if I am able to, will attend again next year.
