Yes, they did.  Not sure why.  Maybe KJ will be by to explain.  Sign up for the 70.3 instead!

of course! I do it every year.  Last year i did the sprint and half.  Im our tri club coordinator so i was wondering if they were having it cause a race like that appeals to all levels of our club.

SUCH a disappointment when I heard that a few months ago! Wanted it to be my first olympic. Just not another olympic around here that fits my schedule.

Yeah, but Gateway is ocean right? I was out in Kemah just Saturday for a 10K run and standing on the boardwalk looking at that water churning with the wind kicking up and thinking thank heavens I am not doing a tri out here today! I wouldn't mind an ocean swim if I could TRAIN in the ocean at least once in awhile, but I can't, so its not going to happen!  Lonestar just "fit" all my requirements so nicely in location, course type, date, etc. I did the CapTex sprint last May, so I will probably just move up to they oly at that instead.

Well it's a bay not a ocean, and which swim got canceled last year because it was too rough? Galveston Olympic. Kemah had some waves, but wasn't rough or choppy. You can't predict what the wind is going to be doing, which is what is going to cause bad swim condition for either race. So don't let that be a part of your choice.

It's in the bay not the gulf.  Unique swim in that you take a boat out 1500 meters, jump in the water and go. The swim was choppy but not too bad. It's a wetsuit swim anyway so what's the worry?  I couldn't drown in my wetsuit if I tried.

As Stephen said, the Lonestar oly swim was cancelled this year because of the awful conditions. Conditions the next day for the 70.3 were okay. Those swims are supposedly in the more protected inlet.

Yikes, boats? You just made it worse! NOT a fan of boats either - major seasickness, I'd be vomiting before the race even started and I prefer to vomit at the finish LOL!  So definitely not the race for me personally!

They were those large tour boats.  As seen on the website:  http://www.onurleft.com/ONURMARK_PRODUCTIONS/Gateway_to_the_Bay_Tri.html

I never felt the boat sway one bit.

Gateway Weekend is April 1st-3rd, Sprint on Sat and the Oly on Sun.

LoneStar is on April 10th.  They are only a weekend apart.

I had a blast at Gateway last year and cannot wait to do it again. IMO, the swim was the coolest part of the race.  Figure I have to taper anyways for the LoneStar 70.3 so might as well start it after doing the Gateway Oly!

Do you think them being a week apart is too close? I liked the 2 weeks last time, I could race hard then start my taper. I'm worried with just a week that might not be a good idea. What does BT think?

I'm probably going to do it and treat it as a training day.

Of course, I did the Syracuse 70.3 on Sunday and just did a 100 mile bike ride today.  I don't pay attention to things like taper and recovery. Smile

Hey guys BIG news! Gateway will have a $32,000 prize purse this year. The even bigger news is that we're going to "try" to get it approved for EVERYONE. So pro or amateur everyone has a shot at it. Let the fastest men and women win!

As for the choppiness....it's a triathlon and that's the fun of the swim. Could be choppy one day and flat the next. The bay is protected but it's a HUGE body of water so you never know. As for the boats....it's an Alcatraz qualifier so we figured we'd honor it in the best way possible, by adopting their swim start style. They love it!

With the elimination of the olympic distance from the Texas 70.3 we are hoping we have record numbers again this year. We are the first open water triathlon of the year, an Alcatraz Qualifier, great awards, life music, $32,000 in prize money, should have over 2,000 people, and being a 1 week before Lonestar is only a problem if you're doing the 70.3 and haven't trained for it. Otherwise your taper and recovery for a Olympic (Gateway) going into a 70.3 (Lonestar) in just a week shouldn't be a problem.

We are also having the sprint on Saturday again, a charity auction, should have a lot of big name pros, we're doing clinics on Saturday with them, and we have a 5k run on Sunday to raise money for the police department for anyone interested in doing a run. Should be a great time and give you olympic distance athletes a home. Spread the word.

The lake is relentless out here in the spring time with all the wind, especially if you swim in a cove with big walls where the water can bang back and forth.
