Subject: why bricks are called bricks
its been said here, and other places, that bricks are called bricks because a) you are stacking the bike and the run, as you would with bricks or b) your legs feel like they are made of bricks once you get off the bike.

well, check out the august issue of 'triathlete'! p. 65 is an article on brick training. why is it called 'brick' training? according to the article, its because thwere was a fellow named MATT BRICK...

"Matt recognized the value in making this shift in body orientation as short as possible. The training solution he conjured up was plain and simple: get off your bike, throw on the running shoes, do not stop at the refridgerator, the bed or the shower. Get out the door immediately after your bike ride and go for a run. And thus was born the workout that adopted his name: the BRICK...

ya learn somethin' new every day.

Yeah, I was really surprised by that article - I also assumed it was because you felt like your feet were as heavy as bricks and that you were 'stacking' your workouts.

Yeah, someone noted that last week. I always heard it was Bike + Run = ICK.

Hey - does it count as a brick if you swim over your lunch hour then ride in the evening after work. That is about as close to a brick as I have gotten.

usually bricks are one after another with at most 5 minutes to change into your next workouts clothes.

It may not be a brick to have separate workouts, but it is definitely an important part of training. I only call it a brick if I do a quick transition, i.e. ride my bike to the pool or run right after biking.

I thought they called it a brick because when you do them you feel like youve run into a wall of bricks.

I recently read that "bricks" were named after Matt Brick that popularized the workout after having much competitive success in or around 1991.  I believe he was from New Zealand if you want to try to look it up.  I was sure that it was the combination of Bike and Run.
