Hello all - does anyone have suggestions for a good swim coach?  I live in Golden so someone on the west side of town would be ideal.  Thanks.

Scott.

There's an older guy at the Y in Arvada that many of the Golden "advanced age" swimmers have used and rave about.  He also teaches my boy in an advanced youth group, it's only been a week but he really knows how to tweak a stroke and position.  I will add his name when my wife emails it.

Steve Hadley, been coaching for ~55 years, I saw a quote at $20 for 30 minute but I have no idea if it is current.  Would be worth trying for a session or two to see if he can help.  Writing this I have pretty much talked myself into it.

There's a Masters Program at Northridge Rec Center in Highlands Ranch, several additional resource links on the bottom half of that page as well.

So here's the scoop, $23/ 1/2 hour for members, $36 for non.  After hearing my story, he had me swim a few laps.  Then he gave me the good news and the bad news.  The good news was I had a good body position, I was rotating well and my stroke was even and relatively straight.  The bad news, I was really slow.  He showed me a few things about coming to the wall and turning to save some time, showed me a few things to think about as I pull and that was it for the "lesson."

What he did do was introduce me to the clock, and told me if I wanted to swim fast, I needed to make friends with the clock.  Then he had me do some 25s, 50s, 100s until I was about to puke and that was my half hour.

At the end he told me that my stroke was fine.  I just needed to learn to push myself in the pool.  He told me to take a month or two and really work the clock and come back if I thought I needed more help.  Even though he didn’t “teach” me a ton, I was glad I did this.  To know that I have the stroke right was confidence building and now I can just focus on the damn clock and ten seconds of rest between those 25s, 50s, and 100s.

Thank you Steve!  Great site.  The first workout was very similar to the couple that Coach Steve had written out for me.

I've found that if you keep the preferences, time trials, and stroke count current on the Settings tab (every few months) you'll get good progress/results.

I've used a tri coach in the Broadway/C-470 area who helped me with my swim.  PM me if you'd like her info.
