Work- 40hrs
Training- 6-10 hrs

I'm amazed at the work hours of this group.  Europeans would laugh at the number of hours we spend at work, as if being able to afford a slightly better bike really makes us happier.

What's the alternative?

Well Andrew- I'm not sure that I know- as each person's situation is unique.  Perhaps your 60-70hr per week of work is completely necessary for you to retain employment, or keep your company from going under.  I wouldn't propose to tell you what to do or to how to live your life, or even be judgemental.  I was merely impressed/surprised at the number of dedicated triathletes- a sport that takes a lot of time, who also work a LOT of hours.

For me- I spent 15 years in a reasonably prosperous and successful career working 50-70 hr weeks.  Then my wife said to me "if you're never here, why was it that I married you?".  I completely changed careers 10 years ago.  I took a significant salary reduction, but now work 40hrs a week in a terrific, healthy environment and don't carry my stress home from the office.  It was time in my life to be a dad and husband.  I was lucky to be able to do this- I realize not everyone has these opportunities.

40ish hrs/week seem pretty much the norm for most posters, a few of us are higher.

European expectations of work are different and they have socialized healthcare, college, etc (at least right now), all of which we have to pay for personally (as opposed to cost spreading through a proper tax scheme).  My job (lawyer) demands a massive time commitment to do it properly and successfully.  I have a lousy bike.  Such is life.

If anyone wants to sponsor me I'd be happy to quit my job and focus on training   I could totally finish top 1000 if I put the effort in.
