Veteran 274 State College, PA | Subject: Tune up HIM for IMLP I'm trying to find a tune up HIM before IMLP next year. I'm leaning towards IM Mooseman, its at about the right time, close enough to not be a hassle to get to, and from looking at the profile has some decent climbs to test the legs on. Anyone have any other suggestions? I'd like a race thats no more than a few hour drive from the Albany area New York. I was also considering Eagleman but its just a bit on the far side. And no I'm not limited to m Dot races just the easiest ones for me to find right now. |

Master 1410 White Plains NY | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP I am doing Mooseman. Something closer for you would be Rev3 in Quassy in CT. I believe its the same weekend or +- one weekend of Mooseman. Edit: I always forget how far up Saratoga Springs is.....its only an hour closer to Quassy than Mooseman for ya. Both races have hilly terrain. Edited by wstchstrTriathlete 2010-09-22 8:22 PM |

New user 73 | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP I would have to agree! Quassy is a great tune up for LP! The hills are just awesome. Throw in a challenging run and you have a great prep for LP! Hope to see you there. Charlie www.rev3tri.com |

Champion 11989 Philly 'burbs | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP I'm doing HarryMan at Pomona NY in late May. 2.5 hrs from Albany. Too far? I know very little about the race other than it was to be my spring HIM this year but I had to defer due to injury. Now it's a Lake Placid warm up. |

The downside to the HarryMan race is that the race organizers are not that great. I know you have free entry into the race, but I did the Olympic the same day and organization that day was ridiculous. They let the HIMers do the swim, but then canceled the Olympic swim due to lack of life gaurds. Huh? Fortunately they put the swim back on @ the last minute, but for the price that I paid for that Olympic, I felt robbed after all of that. Finally, word has it that they just left the HIM stragglers out on the course, packed up and left them on their own. Sorry for the rant, but I wouldn't travel for the HarryMan. |

Regular 64 New York City | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP I did Tupper Lake half as my tune up race for Placid this year. Although it is a small-ish local race it's timing and proximity to Placid means that probably more than half of the competitors are entered for IMLP so competition is pretty fierce. Plus you can go spend Sunday on the Placid course for recovery. |

Not free at all; I paid for 2010 but had to defer. I did a little research on the race before I signed up but I'm going to do some more now. It's 2.5 travel hours for me too. |

However, if you want confident that you are ready for the hills of LP, then HM is just the race for you (harder hills). A very well organized race, but outside your driving distance, is Kinetic Half in Virginia. I chose this one because there are some hills but mostly because it is the perfect spacing from IMLP to use as a tuneup but allow complete recovery with another solid training block between the races. It's really too bad CGI stopped doing the black bear half. |

I rode one loop of the course at LP and it was like a walk in the park compared to SavageMan. |

Master 1927 Guilford, CT | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP Rev3 for me but it's a no brainer since I live in CT. I had wanted to do Eagleman as well just to check out what is always a popular race and maybe put together a fast time since the bike course is geared towards my strength. Considered Mooseman too but another longish drive. So, Rev3 it is. I've also heard they put together a great race so looking forward to it. |

From what I have read and seen elevation profiles of the Savageman, Savageman is waaaaaay harder than HarryMan. HarryMan has one big hill that will take you 15 mins @ the most to get up and you can spin up it sitting down in your easiest gear....of course you will need to do it 4X... |

Not a Coach 11473 Media, PA | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP Harriman. I know they had some issues last year, so maybe there are some concerns there. But I raced the Harriman half two other times and a HIM in PA by the same organizers. Not a single issue with race management in those races. In fact, I'd say they generally went above and beyond in a few instances. Edit: Another option is AmZof. The F1 would be very good prep for IMLP. If you can handle the long course, LP will be a cakewalk. Edited by JohnnyKay 2010-09-24 7:51 AM |

Veteran 202 Broad Brook | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP I have done L.P. the last 3 years and will race again this year. I raced the Harriman half last year and it is a small local race. The swim is very cold mid 50's at best. I did not find the bike to be extremely difficult 1 long hill that you will climb 4x with alot of rollers. The roads were not in the best of shape. lots of expansion joints. The run has alot of rollers, but nothing too steep. This is a great tune up for L.P. very similar courses. I will race the Rev 3 this year. |

Master 1494 Kingston Ontario | Subject: RE: Tune up HIM for IMLP Have you considered crossing the border? The folks that I train with who did IMLP this year all were told by our coach not to do a hilly one (ie: Tupper Lake) but a relatively flat one. They did Welland at the end of June and liked it. It might be too far at around 5 hours from Albany though http://www.msctriathlon.com/ms/events/showEvent.cfm?showEventID=89
