Right after Memorial Day, I posted about an aweful incident here in Jax where a man pulled his car over, got into an altercation with some cyclists during a large group ride and ultimately stabbed two of them - one of them 5 times. Turns out the guy was sentenced yesterday to 1 year jail + 18 months probation. See the article here.

Justice prevails.

"The man then got in his truck and took off. Robert Brown,  another cyclist, chased after the truck and yelled the license plate number to someone else in the group, who saved it in his phone and called police.

Wright grabbed a spare tube for a bike tire and wrapped it around the first cyclist’s wounds to try to stop the bleeding until rescue units arrived.

“You can fix anything with a tube and a spoke,” Wright said."

In the original article, this is awesome! Great job on getting the plates!

I have a friend that lives in Jax.   He told me this morning that the only reason that the plea was accepted by the courts was because the driver will be responsible for getting a job and paying the medical bills of the cyclists when he gets out to the probation office.  Not making payments will be a violation of his probation and he will have to go back to court for further punishment.

Should've been attempted murder charges.  Stabbing someone 5x in the back? C'mon.

If/when that cyclist recovers I hope he takes the guy to the cleaners in civil court.

Agree there should have been attempted murder charges.  Not sure how you can stab someone 5 times without knowing you could possibly kill them.

Not sure if civil court is the answer.  It's only the answer if he has lots of money.  I would bet he doesn't.  I suppose civil court can force the defendant to be the cyclist's butler though...

To me that what I would classify as attempt of murder, I doubt the cyclist would get more out of civil court then its worth. That sentence sucks for what the guy did. It should of been much longer!

That's the Florida justice system for you.  It sucks...

I agree, should have been attempted murder...

I know very little about the legal system but find this mind boggling.  How can someone commit clearly attempted murder and run and only get 1 year?  What kind of defense could you ever come up with?  Provoked?  They are on bikes, Jiminy crickets!!

Usually when a settlement is made, the details are not made public.  My guess is that the prosecutor was worried about taking it to court because the cyclist punched the guy first.

IIRC, the guy in the truck followed them into the lot, got out and got in the face of one cyclist, then another cyclist punched him, THEN he got the knife and went after them.

The cyclists are not always blameless, however unpopular that statement may be.

The articale says "A dispute started when Salmons buzzed past the cyclists, bumping a rider near the Kent Campus of Florida State College at Jacksonville.

According to Salmons’ arrest report, he told police he pulled out a pocketknife and “went to town” after an argument broke out. He also was punched during the skirmish."

So, I am not sure why you think the cyclists are to blame here?

See, that's exactly what I'm talking about. You read my post and immediately assume that I am saying it's the cyclists fault. I am not, but I am also not burying my head in the sand and thinking that the group of 60 was perfectly in two by two and got buzzed for no reason.

Here is a quote from the original writeup of the incident:

A man driving a pickup truck brushed up against one of the cyclists and another rider started yelling at the driver, Wright said.

The driver followed the group into the parking lot, got out of his truck and moved toward one of the cyclists, Wright said.

When the driver, whom Hurst said was in his late teens or early 20s, bumped his chest against the cyclist, another rider punched the driver in the face.

Karma can be a powerful thing.  A lot of things can happen in jail in one year.
