Altona, Victoria

Western Suburbs Triathlon Club
12C / 54F
Overcast
Total Time = 55m 4s
Overall Rank = 15/27
Age Group = M
Age Group Rank = 14/19
Pre-race routine:

Got up at 5:45am and had a banana and yoghurt smoothy!
Drove down to Altona to arrive at 7am. Registered and put my bike in the rack ready to go!
Event warmup:

Brief warm-up jog (approx 3-5 mins) and VERY light stretch.
Run
  • 13m 52s
  • 3 kms
  • 04m 37s  min/km
Comments:

Went out a little quicker and was able to hold a good pace for the majority of the run. Ended up fading a little for the last few hundred meters, but to finish 3km in 4:37 pace is very good!
What would you do differently?:

Try not to "save" myself for the bike... I feel I could push a little harder and then recover on the bike.
Transition 1
  • 01m
Comments:

Picked up a couple of places in T1 and got up to speed quick enough to pick up another a few hundred meters into the bike leg!
What would you do differently?:

Not much! Only thing I should focus on when getting into shoes is to make sure I tighten the shoes enough... probably didn't tighten them enough today.
Bike
  • 24m 9s
  • 12.5 kms
  • 31.06 km/hr
Comments:

Really happy with my bike leg today!... pushed a little harder than last time and was holing my pace at 30-32km/h.
Managed to pass a few people (of which a couple passed me back) but didn't feel like I was floundering as much as last time.
What would you do differently?:

Continue to push hard... try to use other people (i.e. when they pass, try to keep up with them without drafting!)
Transition 2
  • 01m
Comments:

Had a knot in my lace of my left shoe so had to untie that...
I took the time to have a mouthful of water which is definitely benficial and again managed to pick up a place or two in transition.
What would you do differently?:

Remember to stretch out my legs when approaching T2.... would help get my legs moving when I get off and wouldn't loose too much time in the process!
Run
  • 15m 1s
  • 3 kms
  • 05m 01s  min/km
Comments:

Felt pretty shaky at the start but found a rythem that was comfortable albeit a little slow. Got passed by the guy I passed in T2, but couldn't stop him and couldn't keep up with him (I tried). Tried to push hard at the end but probably still didn't speed up.
What would you do differently?:

Just push REALLY hard... knowing that it is only a short distance and you can rest once you finish!
Post race
Warm down:

Not enough (Again)

VERY brief jog and walk then just chatted to Gavin (guy I passed in T2 and who passed me in final run)... nice guy!

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Still need to loose more weight... One comment today was from a guy on first run who said "I'm hurting so you must be"... kinda felt this was said because I'm bigger than most :-(

Just need to keep on training :-)

Event comments:

Good series!... would definitely participate in WSTC Duathlon series again!
