Also in regards to characterizing this as a "witch hunt". I have felt very uncomfortable with the veracity of numerous posts and claims David has been making this summer in regards to his training. I could see the few race reports he's posted here and in the past two, he's seemed to have this amazing jump in performance. I didn't think anything much about it beyond that, it never occurred to me nor was I even remotely motivated to go and search out the actual online results. Then last week on ST he posts a thread about this swim workout where he completed 40x50 on the :50 coming in under :30. Immediately, some of the ST swimmers questioned him on it and found it difficult to believe and they actually did go back and look at some of his other results. Again, it just made me very skeptical of him.

Now we have this. Even after he posted what to me looked like world class results from a guy who had never raced at that level, I said great job, David. Then this thread appears and for me it's the straw that broke the camels back, so I did go and look up his reports and online results and found nothing but discrepancies and inconsistencies which make no sense. The additional comments from people who were at the race added to a point where this looks for all intents and purposes like a house of cards falling down. Add to that the fact that he holds himself out as a coach who as I said, has taken coaching fees from people here, you bet I'm going to call him out on this.

I sure hope that David comments on this. But I do have to say I am in the same boat as Bryan on this deal as I have been skeptical of races, training and posts that I have read that don't seem to jibe.

bryancd - 2010-09-28 1:14 PM He should also respond to his Little Smokies Half RR here on BT where he lied about his swim split and finishing time. http://www.beginnertriathlete.com/discussion/forums/thread-view.asp... vs. http://www.hfpracing.com/images/stories/2010_raceresults/ATTOH/resu... He claims he swam a 23, he swam a 28. He said he finsihed in 5:13, they show 5:16. And now he's a 4:15 Half IM athlete?

Uhhh, yeah this sort of thing along with all the other stuff popping up doesn't look good.

You take my name and look up any race I've done and the numbers line up "Even Steven"... for starters.

If this is true, bad form bad form!!!

Hmmm.. So far, the accusation is that he slow-swam the swim (only did one lap) and skipped part of the bike (the out-and-back - 8 miles?). I didn't see how many times he was accused of skipping the out-and-back (up to three?). I'm surprised no one has said anything about the run yet! Maybe he used a scooter or moped? So now we're in the 2:10+/100 on the swim and what, 13-16MPH on the bike (total guesses on the numbers...)??? Maybe they should be asking all of the MOP folks if they saw him!

I'm reading all of the posts with a LOT of skepticism. I think David has been very up-front about his training and also helpful with his posts. I've never had a reason to doubt his integrity, and I still don't. I don't know the race course and based on what other's have said a mistake may have happened. He's also been training very hard and it's also possible he just had that good of a race. I'm willing to bet he'll do another race, and many more after that. His performance in those races will tell a lot about his abilities.

I'm in the innocent-until-proven-guilty camp. I know he's trying to build his coaching business. As a part of that, he's been training himself to the bone (did he say 20-25 hours a week training?). If I wasn't working full time, I'd love to train that much! And if I was training that much, I'll bet I'd be doing better than I am in my races. Maybe I should just accuse the people who beat me of cheating too. After all, I probably never saw any of them either.

. Thoughts?

Very possible. At Rev3 knoxville a number of the pro's did not cross the bike timing mat and had to come back... at the Amica Knoxville Sprint Championship, 1st-3rd place completely ran right by the second loop of the run... they were still awarded the trophies and nobody figured it out for a day or two... My mother was standing watching both times. I'm sure that at the front, it's the same as it is in the middle... you get in a groove and the person in front of you goes one way, you are behind them, you take for granted they know what they are doing and you follow.

not saying anything in favor or against... just my personal observations.

Yes, as that was the more worrisome part IMHO.

Yep, it is and saying it's correct really doesn't cut it. He needs to address the people who accused him. Just to be clear, I don't trust David as far as i could throw him at this point, so my comments should be taken with that understanding.

I'd say that explains one part of it. The swim times are still there...but I'll let it get hashed out and see what happens.

Would have been esier to disappear.  So, I find it hard to believe he'd go public with the truth yet continue to lie about the swim, especially since that to believe that he cut the course (intentionally) would require a belief that he sprinted out with the other 2 or 3 elites and then proceeded to swim one loop at a 2+/100 pace.  Which for fast swimmers - which David most definitely is, even if you question exactly how fast -- is excruciatingly slow, especially in a race (no offense to people that swim that pace, you'd say the same thing about my "run"  )

I am not saying the other swimmer lied that he never saw anyone pass him, but (putting on the lawyerly hat), saying you didn't see something happen isn't as strong as saying you did see something happen.  perhaps David got out in front and the other guy didn't realize it.  Perhaps he passed on the guy's nonbreathing side.

Of course, there's only one person that knows what really happened.  And you either believe him or you don't

All,

It looks like you've already seen it, if not, i posted my reply in its own thread. I made an honest mistake.
I've made wrong turns before, twice. once i went through an intersection i was suppoed to turn on, and once kept going past a turn.

Again, with the swim times, i openly welcome anyone who questions them to race with me next season.

The little smokies swim was not 23 min, i'm pretty sure i just bumped the stop button on my watch.
they didn't have splits up when i wrote my race report so i simply put what i had seen on my watch.

Convenient. I'll say this to you directly as to be perfectly clear and allow for no ambiguity. I don't believe a word you say.
