Less than a week away. This was a fun race last year and I'm looking forward to doing it again.  Just wish the UVa / FL State game wasn't at noon... there goes another ticket :-

I'm hoping to cut about 10 min off the race if the conditions are similar.  3 on the bike and 7 on the run.  Right now, the forecast looks great.  Too far to get too excited though.

Anyone else planning on it?  Any first time OLY's?

Stu

My son will be doing the International for his first Oly.  He has three sprints under his belt and one was a 750m OWS with a 17 mile hilly bike course.  He finished second in his age group (40-44) at his last sprint, but just hopes to finish this one for the experience.

I'll be doing this one, although I just recovered from a foot injury from my last tri (Patriots Sprint)...I haven't been able to train and now I'm in the 'taper week'....here's to hoping that my training all season will catch up.

Bob... are you coming up for it as well (either to watch or participate)?  As Tri's go, it is fairly spectator friendly (presuming it is in the same place as last year)  - the swim goes around a peninsula, the bike is a 2 loop course, and the run is an out and back (2x).  I think it is basically doubling up the sprint course.

Luke, especially with your foot injury, watch your footing on the first (and last) part of the run as it goes through the woods... several folks took spills there on the tree roots last year.

Weather looking perfect for a 10am start.  Water temp website at Lake Anna hasn't been updated since 9/14 when it was 75.  I'm guessing low 70s between the cool nights and the rain this week, but offset some with the power plant.  Anyone happen to live out there?

I'll be there for Sat and Sun. Sounds like they're going to post water temps tomorrow, but I think mid-70's is a fair guess, so wetsuits legal.

This will hopefully my first Oly without 2 flat tires--So I'm looking for a PR! :-)

Not this time Stu.  Actually I've been trying to talk my son out of it as he has a hernia he needs to get repaired and his knee is giving him trouble, but he really wants to do an Oly this year and work towards a HIM next year.  I'm not ready yet as I've only swum 1 mile once so far and that was in a pool so I need a lot more swimming time before I attempt it.  Maybe next year.  Although I'll probably do the White Lake International next year as it's close enough for me to sleep in my own bed the night before.  I hope the weather cooperates for you.  Have a great race!

Kate, I would think that two flat tires would give you quite a time cushion.  My handicap is even easier to overcome... I'm planning on this being my first OLY wearing my helmet on the bike ride :-)  Easy to improve over a DQ.  I am, however, impressed that you're doing both races... can't say I understand the allure of that, but I'll check in with you on Monday!

Bob, I hear White Lake is a beautiful swim... sounds like a good place to start.  I hope your son won't experience any problems on Saturday.  I'd probably give him similar advice that you have, but I'd probably ignore my own advice if I were in his shoes.  I will say that having a challenging OLY experience will help his prep for the HIM.  The HIM was a big step up and you want to go into that prepared.

If anyone sees my son, please introduce yourself since I can't be there.  His name is Rob and he's in the 40 - 44 age group.  He probably will be wearing a black, orange and white Orca tri-top.  Here's a photo from the triathlon we did together in South Riding.  He also will be riding a red Felt S32 bike.  Thanks and good luck to all!

My son said that "He survived" in 2:47.  The swim was was 1/3 good, 1/3 bad, and the last 1/3 great as he finally found his rhythm.  The bike was good for him and the run was brutal as he wasn't really ready for the demands of the race.  He learned a lot and will be better prepared for next year's Oly season.  I hope everyone had a great day!

I finished in about 2:46!!! This is 30 minutes faster than my previous International time of 3:18. Making some progress! The swim was great for me - although not fast. Bike was just OK. I took 2 Powerbar tangerine gels with me, and everytime I try to take those, I end up wanting to throw up -- good thing i kept it down though. The run started great, but the second loop got to me. Now, I am soooooooore and hurt. I guess my body wasn't ready for the stress since I took 2 weeks off. This concluded my 2010 Triathlon season. I am happy with my overall results - as of the beginning of the race, I was 8th in the setupevents.com age group overall results.

Couldn't ask for better conditions... perfect water temp and calm... beautiful sunny, but cool, Fall day.  Just a great way to end the season.  I took 6min off the bike and 7 off the run, but added 6 on the swim and the transitions for a net improvement of 7 minutes.  Really happy with my overall performance.

Luke - outstanding improvement and it sounds like Rob had a decent first OLY experience.  On to the race report.  Congrats to all!

See you in 2011!  (unless you'll be at the Richmond Half Marathon)
