What do you attribute the large disparity in transition times (between contestants) to?  Do you think it's a matter of simply not being good at them (i.e. not practicing enough or not knowing the proper procedures)?  I don't think so.  Might it just be a factor of not caring (absolutely no malice in that statement)?  By the latter statement, I'm speaking of those who simply don't put the emphasis on shaving seconds, overall.

Couldn't it also be a fitness issue?  If you're completely gassed entering T1/T2, how fast can you be?

I don't think (personal opinion) there's anything magical to low T times.  It isn't rocket science.

Transitions if it's a sprint.

Pacing if it's an oly.

Nutrition if it's anything longer.

I really don't put too much emphasis on transitions.  I have never practiced them and come race day it is simply a mental checklist I go through.  I'm not terribly slow but not fast either.  They are really important tough if you want to place in your AG!  I always look to see how I finished in my AG relative to not counting transition times.  I can usually move up a spot or two taking out transition times.  In fact, last week the 3rd place guy in my AG beat me by less than 30-seconds ( was 4th).  In transitions he was over a minute faster.  So they are important and I know many triathletes that do practice.  I'm just not one of them.
