Subject: Lava magazine any good?
Just got Oct/Nov issue of Lava. I never requested a copy, but for some reason I was sent a copy. Anyways, it looks pretty good and was maybe thinking of doing a subscription, anyone have experience with this? I sometimes get a copy of triathlete but really haven't subscribed to anything.

It's one of two things, and I can't remember which one...

Folks are getting one free year of Lava if:

Either anyone who has registered for a WTC (i.e. Ironman) event this season

Or...

You are a current USAT member

I fall in both camps, and I can't remember which one is triggering the free year of Lava.

Cheers, Chris

I believe it was stated in the Letter from the Editor in the first issue that if you registered for an Ironman branded event, full or half, you were on the receiving end of a one year subscription.

I was leaning towards that answer, since it is a WTC publication. Thanks for the clarification!

Is it any good?  Well, it beats staring at the bathroom floor.  :-)

I too got one....a year's subsciption....probably got my name off some triathlon race mailing list.  I think it is scheduled to come out 6x a year.

yep, if you did a IM or HIM they send you a year for free...

Funny thing is that I did both an IM and a HIM and somehow for the HIM they put my last name first instead of first name first as they did for my IM....I get 2 copies

Just got my first issue, and the first 20 pages alone blow anything in the last 6 issues of Triathlete out of the water.

I like it so far, its almost like they hired a bunch of ST posters as their writers.  The other Tri mags just seem alot more out of touch; as if half the writers aren't even triathletes.

I think it probably has to doing HIM/IM. I was a USAT for many months, but only recently did a HIM, soon after I got the mag, so most likely from that. It does seem better than triathlete mag, I was thinking of initially getting Triathlete, but the issues seem variable, Lava looks better.

I got it for signing up for an IM event.

I have a major gripe with the mag.

The first two addresses from editors are all about how Lava is for the elite of the elite triathletes, only those who participate in IM and HIM. It's not for the beginner. The message is pounded into you for the first few pages.

Then, their first tech column is about how to shift. Really, elite triathletes haven't learned to shift a bike? Which is it, is the mag aimed at the elite, or the beginner? Or are triathletes as bad a riding a bike as cyclists believe them to be?

This inconsistency of target audience really irks me.

I thought the interviews were interesting but I couldn't get passed the issue I mentioned above to really enjoy the mag.
