Age Group Rank = 16/186
Pre-race routine:

Pancakes w/ PB/Honey/Banana, Sweet Potato, Ultragen, and OJ about 3 1/2 hours before race.
Swim
  • 26m 16s
  • 2143 yards
  • 01m 14s / 100 yards
Comments:

Got into a very nice rythem for once this year. Happy with sighting, my goggles not fogging, drafting, swimming my own race focusing on form.
Transition 1
  • 03m 23s
Comments:

I thought I had a flawless transition but as my time shows it was pretty slow. Going to have to work on running faster out of water to bike, I ran slower than normal mostly because I came out of water with a lot of slower athletes in waves before me that had no urgency to get on bike, they just wanted to walk and talk to transition.
What would you do differently?:

Run faster and with more urgency.
Bike
  • 2h 30m 58s
  • 56 miles
  • 22.26 mile/hr
Comments:

Other than losing 300 calories of perpetuum on first turn on my bike I felt great, supplemented with gatorade instead, made me ride a lot more conservative than I would have liked unsure of how my body was going to react to different nutrtion plan. Was looking for a 2:25 bike split and higher wattage but I kept up simple. Average power - 198, average cadence 96 (I'm 5'8" 148 lbs)
What would you do differently?:

Not lose bottle early in ride, push power more, hit the breaks more than any other race I have ever done before in this race. Turns were tough but some downhills I had to break because a lot of people would start to pass someone when I was trying to pass them.
Transition 2
  • 01m 40s
Comments:

Felt good, put on a dry pair of socks and my shoes stayed dry.
Run
  • 1h 38m 42s
  • 13.1 miles
  • 07m 32s  min/mile
Comments:

Good run course, the dry socks and shoes felt good for awhile but around mile 2 I felt the blisters forming already, the combo of dry socks and shoes on socking wet wrinkled feet turned into some bad blisters. I toughed it out and struggles with my right calf cramping the entire race. I hung tough and finished strong even though I never got into a rythem the entire 1:38.
Post race
Warm down:

Got a post-race massage from augusta school of massage, ate, stretched, drank.

I met a girl who ran with zoots sockless, I picked them up to find they weight near nothing even when wet, I then picked up the sock/asic 2140 I was wearing and was shocked at how heavy they were, going to try some zoot footwear now!!

Event comments:

Overall good day, this was my first Ironman branded race, I tend to do smaller local races, the competition was really good to see how I can stack up against but I enjoy the smaller races more, plus they are a lot cheaper, I will look into doing the SC Half next year or the speculated rev3 race near Atlanta.

great race. I had the same trouble in transition. Those rows are really tight. I dont know how people walk in transition then stop at mount line. Guess they dont know that time counts equal to swim, bike and run times.
