Subject: 650 trainer wheel/tire, 700 up front
My wife has a Giant OCR 3 road bike with 650's on it that she hasn't ridden in some time.  I thought about using her rear wheel/tire as a trainer tire, but my Cervelo P2SL has 700's on it.  Can I swap the rear wheels out for trainer purposes only and leave my front wheel alone?  Also, her bike has a 9 speed cassette and mine has a 10 speed cassette.  Would this pose a problem? Just trying to save a little money and not eat up my road tire.

You won't be able to just switch her 650 onto your bike for the trainer tire.  The cassette won't line up with your derailleur, the chain will be the wrong length and the brakes won't work since they will sit above her wheel.  You can get a trainer tire for about $30 from REI.  That's a much better solution.

You can run your rear derailleur on friction and it will work with the 9 speed. True, you would not have brakes but you don't need them for the trainer.

Could do ok on the trainer with that setup.  What tires does she have on the 650 wheel? 

I have 650's on my Klein and used a set of Kenda Koncepts ($10 apiece or something like that) and never came close to wearing them out on the trainer.  I put about 2300 miles on them, about 1/3 on the trainer.  I "retired" them earlier this year for a set of Gatorskins, but I may put them back on for another season of riding to nowhere.

Agreed that you don't need brakes...at least most of the time.  I sometimes need mine when the cats get too close to the trainer.

Shifters in friction mode, or swap the cassettes, and you're fine. Just don't forget and start out on the road with it (no rear brakes).
