Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 5, got ready and my saint of a wife drove me over to the transition area. Ate half a plain bagel and drank some gatorade while getting my stuff set up in the dark.
Event warmup:

None. Listened to the pre-race briefing and then headed to the swim start.
  • 20m 22s
  • 820 yards
  • 02m 29s / 100 yards

Good swim. I tried to learn from prior mistakes (e.g., going off course). I made a conscious effort to make sure I was near other racers at all times. It was difficult to sight on the course with the chop being tossed up by the wind. I just kept the mantra of "slow is smooth, smooth is fast" repeating in my head and, right on schedule, I was at the finish.
Transition 1
  • 02m 48s

Good transition. Wetsuit off, bike shoes and helmet on, and off to the bike mount line. I was a little winded from the swim so I sat down to put my shoes on.
  • 34m 1s
  • 10.56 miles
  • 18.63 mile/hr

Fun bike ride. I stayed aero almost the entire time and I think it really made a difference on this day. The winds were strong and gusty. I could see the riders on road bikes fighting their way through it. I now understand the benefits of aero but also see why people caution against disc wheels and deep front wheels in strong winds (I rode a disc cover in the back and H3 tri-spoke in the front). For a short race it wasn't too bad and I am very happy with my time and place.
What would you do differently?:

Maybe consider more wind-friendly wheels.
Transition 2
  • 01m 38s

Bike shoes off, running shoes and hat on, and go.
What would you do differently?:

Turn my Garmin on before the race and locate the satellites ahead of time. I spent some time fiddling with it when I should have been off and running.
  • 26m 11s
  • 3.11 miles
  • 08m 25s  min/mile

I am very pleased with my run time. I am not a runner. I did a 10K race the week before (Cow Harbor) and finished in about my usual training time so I did not expect anything out of the ordinary today (probably about 30 minutes or so for the 5K). I tried to push myself on this run thinking it was only 3 miles and I might be able to hold on until the finish (run faster and you'll be finished sooner). I worked (but I wouldn't try it for anything longer than 5K). Finally a flat course!
What would you do differently?:

Best run of the season for me. This off season is going to be very run focused.
Post race
Warm down:

Met up with my family and hung around the post-race area until transition opened. Chased my kids around.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

I'm not what you would call a speedy racer.

Event comments:

An excellent race in a beautiful location. I did the half-iron last year and both events are well run productions. The organizers are nice, the fellow competitors are friendly and the race has a real nice feel to it.
