Pre-race routine:

Drove to Saint Paul with Kelly and then jumped on a bus for Minneapolis. Hung out in the Metrodome until start time. Stayed in the dome a little longer than I was comfortable with but was not willing to leave the side of my lovely wife any sooner than needed.
Event warmup:

Shivered next to 11,000 other folks.

Comments:

This is a great race. Had a perfect day for running and the course is a real gem. I was hammering along at my dream pace for the first 8 miles and then hit a snag. Right quad started acting really funny and I knew then I had a decision to make. Decided to dial it back right then and there. Had a dream goal of sub 4 hours but that was if everthing went perfect. It didn't and I'm fine with it. Went along at a good strong pace until mile 18 or so when things got tough. I was shooting for a 4:15 at this point but lost some mental focus and was getting sick and tired of being near Sven Sundgaard and his little groupie troup. Pace dropped a little more and I started to throw some walk breaks in. Pace did slow more than I would have liked but still managed to finish under 4:30 and knocked almost 55 minutes off old PR.
What would you do differently?:

Would like to get out earlier to get in a decent position. I like having pacers and we were a couple of minutes behind the 5:30 pace group to start with. Took a long time to catch groups and I had no real way to judge pace as I am not good at going by feel. Several times I looked at Garmin to find I was going slower than I wanted. This may have saved me from collapse at the end but I still feel I could have went faster. This really does not bother me btw. I am very happy with this race.
Post race
Warm down:

Crossed finish line and looked for food. Tank was very empty and I needed something quick. Got something to eat and then waited for Kelly. Ended up I didn't have to wait long and I heard her name announced. Good day both of us.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

My weight. I am still not happy with where I am for weight. I am going to commit to getting down to 200 pounds for Ironman next year. This would be a 30 pound drop in 49 weeks. Totally doable if I have the commitment.

Event comments:

This was a great event. I will not do it next year due to IM training but plan on hitting it up again in the future.

great job my friend.  it's a little easier when you don't have 114 miles already, isn't it?

CONGRATULATIONS! Holy cow, what, was your old marathon PR from an IM or something? That's fantastic

30 lbs, 49 weeks, totally doable indeed. But, like this marathon, be happy with 15-20 because that's just awesome anyway.

Did you remember to enjoy the pain? It sounds like you did.
