Subject: 2nd Tri...Injured and Out
I did my 2nd tri last Saturday. Details are on Race Reports: Great Lakes Triathlon/Duathlon Championships.

After having an OW meltdown in June, I finished 10th of 40 in my AG this time, turning the swim from my weakest to the strongest leg.

I gave up running two weeks prior to the event, though, due to my inflamed 2nd metatarsal joint, and my run leg suffered. Now, I can't even walk on the thing, and it's time to get off my foot for a while.

My plan is to swim like a maniac for the time being and hope that the foot settles down in time for a fall duathlon before the Michigan season gives way to ice and snow. I had hoped to do an Oly in August, but it just wouldn't be wise. It's time to listen to the body.

It feels great to have found this cool sport and to be able to put together a respectable race, with a lot of room for future improvement, but it's also quite frustrating to be forced to the sideline at this year's fitness peak.

I'll be living vicariously through your reports, people.

Oh monkeyboy! You shaved and everything! I'm so sorry to hear you are injured. Man, that's the dread I have - 'specially being so new to this, and hopeful.
I got injured last year (not training related) just when I was cranking up my training & I was inconsolable. It was really hard because none of my friends could quite understand why I was so bummed out. They'd say, "Well, you can do it next year." And I wanted to punch a wall. Felt like such a waste. They just don't get the time invested and the mental and emotional commitment that's going on, and what a loss it feels like.
I don't have any science to back this up, but it really seemed like swimming helped me in recovery with my stress fracture.
Keep your sprits up & get well soon!

Just because I'm out of competition for a while doesn't mean I have to stop shaving!

Monkeyboy - Injuries suck! I think the swimming idae is good as you can keep up your conditioning while the foot heals. I will never be able to do much training through the run as I have two artifical knees. So I bike and am now adding the swim to build my endurance. The plan is then to add alittle running but rely on the swimming and biking for my training. At 44 and with replacement parts my only goal right now is to finish. Hang in there!

monkey boy (dude I love being able to call someone that)

Sorry about your issues and you probably have tried this but anyway. After 6 months of suffering top of foot pain during running I went to see a orthopedic podiatrist and he made me custom orthodics. They made a cast of my feet and built the orthodics just for my lousy feet. They cost around $250 but I can run (not very fast but thats my issue). They lasted about 18 months and I replaced them when I started having pain in that area again. I still have pain in my ankle after longer or really fast runs but the orthodics keep me racing. Good luck!
