Pre-race routine:

Up early, brekkie of a banana, a slice of toast and some juice. Wife dropped me off close to the MCG where the start was, so was there early enough to have a wander round then headed off towards the start.
Event warmup:

Walking from the drop off to the start was my warmup!
Run

Comments:

Awesome atmosphere, running along the streets of Melbourne!
Took it easy for the first half to make sure I didn't make a mess of myself. Got to the halfway point in 1:01:00 so thought it would be touch and go for a 2 hour run. Picked it up a bit on the way back until 16k when I knew I had to push the last 5k. This was where it started to hurt as my long runs have only been up to 14k recently, not enough I know, but surprisingly I held on, and managed to pick it up again for the last 2-3ks. Approaching the MCG again was awesome, and to finish inside that wonderful stadium was a huge honour! To think I've been on the MCG turf as often as the Freo Dockers have this year is amazing!
Garmin told me I had done 21.1 at 1:59:11 but we still had 200m to go so one last sprint (which got me the 199 HR) got me over the official line in 1:59:56. (Not sure which time to use here, official, or the garmin! Garmin will do for now)
Got some water and fruit, saw a friend finish the marathon, then headed home for a nice shower!
What would you do differently?:

Think I ran the perfect race, given my fitness and knee issues. Nutrition & hydration were both good, just need to run more, and longer.
Post race
Warm down:

Wandering round the MCG !

What limited your ability to perform faster:

Lack of long run training, and a suspect right leg

Event comments:

Awesome event, wonderful volunteers and amazing spectators. Will see how the schedule and training goes for next year........

Well done Nigel - brilliant race. Good to see you enjoying it again relatively pain free.

I'm amazed that you did so well given the distances you were running in your training sessions. Gutsy effort mate.!

Congratulations on a great race! It is always hard to do negative splits in a long race. Well done!
