Ten days ago they were at roughly 3,800 participants.

ajusf16 - 2011-04-11 8:45 PM Registration closes today, doesnt look like it is sold out yet?

Do you think people are waiting to see how much the WTC messes thing up?

Putting that 3,800 number in perspective:

There were only 3,019 finishers in 2010. I think registration of approx. 3,700 (as of 10 days ago) is a healthy turnout.

I heard lots of grumbling about the shortened swim, as well as the fury with the cancelled swim in 2009. I think last year's race registration took a hit as a result of the cancelled swim.

There were about 3,684 finishers in 2009 (with over 3,800 registered).

I did the race in 2006; they closed registration after about 3,700. Registration closed in a matter of hours. They pulled about 80 people out of the water that year.

I'd be surprised if people were holding back due to the involvement of the WTC. I think the swim course if the biggest factor.  Additionally, we've seen a proliferation of events in this area. Lots of competition for your leisure dollars and not just within triathlon.

Lastly, registration is now $160; it was $125 when I did it (if I remember correctly). That's without the active.com fees included. It's gotten pricier but it still fills up.

I am thinking price is the biggest factor, $160 for olympic is steep IMO

I agree that $160 is steep, but so is $75 for a sprint ($95 if you register late). Triathlons in this area are pricey and yet they continue to sell out.

Today's water temp didn't drop below 79 and hit a high of 81. At 6am the temp was 80.39.

I just realized I have a 5K race on Saturday evening for which I am the Medical Director. (I know, I really should learn to read a calendar!) Anybody know what is the earliest you can check in?  I need to be back by 5 PM for race set-up.

So has anyone seen the swim wave starts published yet?  Per the website, they would be published NLT April 15th... but it wouldn't be the first time I've just over looked something

I don't think they ever publish the waves when they say that! It would be nice to know.

This will be the first race where I am in a wave of just 0-39 Clydes.  That completely eliminates the guessing game at the beach of "Is that guy a Clyde or an AGer?"

Someone else has noticed....  Although I am doing FL Half in Orlando on 4 weeks time, I am now officially a triathlon training person.  No more of this crazy fees for another training session with my buddies.  Yes, it's our own fault!

Wow, so they really mixed up the waves from last year.  While I feel for the women and Clydes that usually get stuck last I'm not so sure it's the best idea putting them in the order they have.

You have some "traditionally" slower groups in front of the the "traditionally" faster groups.  It's gonna get bunched up on the bike pretty badly this year.

Wow... Hate to sound like a whiner, but I'm in the very last wave... more than 2hrs after the first wave.  Can't wait for that 10k run in the mid-day sun/heat

Kind of wish I'd just gone in the 0-39 Clydes group and see what happens.

So being new to all this, what is the general rule of thought for race directors determining wave start order?

x2 on this.  only reason i did go clyde and went ag (m35-39) was to go early and avoid the late morning heat.  guess they are trying to make up for those last year that got the shortened swim later in the morning by letting them swim early.

Ok, so I guess this happens, especially at big races. So what do people do for 2+ hrs waiting for their start?? Brung a popup tent and chairs and play cards, stay out of the sun, throw a block party??

Bring a magazine (something you can ditch easily).  Find a tree. Cheer on others who are in the waves before you.

The good news is you'll have no issue finding an empty porta-potty at that time

Slight correction... I won't have a crazy wait for a port-a-pottie... After 3500+ people, an "empty" one might be impossible

After I get my chip and set up my transition, I am going back to sleep. Anyone else at Larelle House besides me and Yeajackson?  Thanks to Socks for giving me her usual room since she is out this year.  Any plans for a group BT swim on Saturday?

Chill out. After my swim warmup, I dry off, lay down in the sand and crank some tunes on my nano. Eat a banana about 30mins before my wave starts and a GU about 15mins before start.

HAVE FUN!

hat's up with WTC and M 45-49? Was the pool boy a 46 yo man?  or what? Augusta 70.3 was the same thing, wave before the very freaking last one! I'm not the exactly the fastest in the bike, but I think I overtook hundreds of people making it a bit unsafe...... I guess the only option here is to get older in a hurry!!!!

And for the record, YES I AM WHINING!!!

Just kidding, it will be fun no matter what. I just hope water doesn't get too rough by then and they either shorten or cancel the swim, that would really suck......
