I just registered! Anyone else?

I have a fair amount of work to do. This was my first year and I completed 4 sprints, with varying success. I've got my first HM next month,  I'd better plan some early season Olys.

I didn't realize it was open for registration yet.  I'm 100% doing this one.  It's the first leg of my "race around the world" trip.

I just registered, are you following any BT program for this?

I choosed the beginner Half Ironman program, I think is well detailed with peridization.
I'm reading also the Triathlon training bible.

This is my second year and did few olympic races in 2h50min this year and an half marathon in 1h48m.
For the next year I planned a couple of olympic races in june and july and the half ironman in galway in september

Any tips and thoughts on training are very well accepted....

Consistancy will serve you well right now.  Pick a plan and stick to it.  I followed the BT beginner HIM plan for my first half and it worked well.  I would also make use of Jorge's Cycling Program (free through the site).

Galway will be my first leg of my race around the world trip that month.

I also registered.

I wanted to do this from the moment I saw it, I'll be in Ireland in September for a cousin's wedding on the 17th but am not sure how I'm going to do all the logistics.  I know it's a long way off to planning that kind of stuff but I'm too type A to not think about it.

This will also be my first HIM, which I'm also freaking over, I did one as a relay, but it's a whole other game doing the whole thing, but of course I said the same thing before my first sprint, and oly Wink. . .

Anyone know what the water temps will be like there?  I've swam off the coast in Lahinch, and that was COLD Surprised so if it will be like that I'll invest in a thicker wet suit.

The water will be cold, and probably choppy. At least it is cold and choppy in North Wales that time of year, and Galway Bay is even more exposed than what I am used to. I plan to do a series of sea swims next season to help me prepare. I've booked a room in the recommended hotel, it is expensive, but they only need a small deposit to hold the room. If I can find something less expensive later, I'll cancel, but I'm happy to know there is a place to stay.

It will be my first HIM, too. It will be my second year - last year I did 4 sprints. I am going to do the BT winter plan that prepares for an OLY starting tomorrow, and then start the HI plan on 17 April. Type A here too .

My race plan for next year is one local long sprint, a flattish Oly, an oly with a sea-swim and big hills, two 1500m stand alone sea swims, and then the HIM.

I've read that over 1,000 people have signed up so far.

After Galway I will spend my B-day getting trashed at a random Irish Pub (5th).  Then head to Beijing for AG Worlds (Olympic Distance) on the 10th.  Following weekend, on the Gold Coast of Australia for another HIM and finally I have to find a race on the west coast of the US the final week of September.

Then back to Atlanta.  It's going to be EPIC!!

The Race looks pretty incredible and i'll give it a bash nect year if it works out well in Sept. I'll be doing Kenmare this year and i think i'd be shot by my other half if I even suggested a second HIM!

Hi Folks,

Im a local. I didnt enter this one as my mind was still messed after St.Croix last year......sighhhh

The sea is not as exposed at it looks on maps. The Aran Islands to the west dampens and big ocean swell. The water will be at its warmest at that time of the year and we get lots of gulf stream so its not that cold. Some people swim all year round without wetsuits (fruitcakes but it proves that its not 'that  cold').

As with everywhere it can be rough on a very windy day but generally its ok for swimming- down to luck with weather as with all events - I did IMSA in 09 and you would not have been able to swim on the day before or after the event but it was like a pond on the race day.

The cycle should also be ok. There are no Kenmare type hills near the venue. There is a short steep hill at about 1 mile and on the return leg after the sharp right hand turn it climbs for about one mile. If there is a blow it will usually be from the west around here so you will have it to your back coming home.

Road surface on the bike can be mixed. Its scenic tourist country so highways are not the norm. Im sure they will make an effort to have the course bike friendly.

Galway is a lively tourist and University town and has a reputation as a party town. The Volvo Ocean race really caught everyones imagination when it stopped here a couple of years ago and got huge numbers of spectators. So hopefully you will have lots of support on the run.

The media is starting to make noise about the race so I expect by the end of summer it will be well hyped.

Like everywhere else Tri  has really exploded in Ireland hence the sellout.

If you have time to tour around, make sure you see as much of the western coastline as possible. Its fully exposed to the Atlantic Ocean so its pretty dramatic scenery.

Definitely check around with the hotels. There are plenty of hotelsin Galway and our economic situation means its much more competitive at present. You should be able to get a good deal.

Bring some rain gear, its usually ok at that time of the year but we are the umberalla for Europe. The weather fronts from the Atlantic hit us first.

Enjoy !
