Subject: Sram S80/S80 over the S60/S80 wheel set?
I've decided to make a new wheel purchase. I think I'm going to go with a sram set.
I've seen some people do the S60 in front and S80 in the back and some do S80 on both. What are the benefits and drawbacks to each setup?

How heavy are you? Lighter people tend to get thrown around with deeper front wheels. How much the cross wind can act on the front wheel is about the biggest difference. Go as deep as you can safely handle the front wheel.

I'm 175lbs right now and don't see myself much lower than 170lbs in the future.

s80/s80, get a cover for the rear s80.

You ought to be able to handle an s80 up front no problem.

I would also say S80 both front and rear.  I have the S60/S80 combo and while I like them a lot, I am 155 lbs. and have no trouble at all with control. In hindsight I wish I had the S80 front and rear.  Too expensive to change now.

Also depends on your speed.  The faster you are the more benefits you get from a deeper front. Usually you do not see any improvement over a 60 to 80 unless you are averaging over 26mph.  If you are slower than that, you are just carrying extra weight in the front.

If you are moving forward, you get benefit from deep wheels. Yes the faster you move, the more benefit but if you're doing over 1 MPH you get more from 80 than you do 60, that's just basic fluid dynamics. Would you mind showing any study that shows otherwise? I'm really curious.

I'm interested in knowing what you mean by "benefits." Time savings? Power savings? Cool factor? This pronouncement is too general.

26mph is where all the aero happens! I learnded that off stuff I read on the intratoobs. It also happens to be the exact speed I cannot maintain for 40k. Well, that and 25, and 24... And 23 to be honest. 2 or 3x on the S80 front, S80 rear with a wheelbuilder cover.

That's what happens when you have cool wheels and you're not maintaining 26 MPH.

I guess the question is does it do harm to have the s80 under 26? If not, and you can handle it in the wind, why not get the s80. The ultimate goal would be to avg 26 or better anyway....right?

I will say I agree in the vaguest sense... Deeper isn't always better. (Look at the Hed3 vs. Hed3D on Hed's website if you want an example)

however, for most of us without a solid way to test the wind the day we race... it's a fairly safe assumption that deeper = better.

and  i knew you were going to respond to me...lol

yes dependant on the yaw angles the H3D are better suited for racing at speeds above 25 mph....however you would still get a benefit...

we are talking aero dynamics though...deeper wheels in general test quicker in windtunnel....

just once i want to see an independent study....that takes all the wheels....and the test groups 40mm, 60mm, 80mm, 90mm and then puts on the exact same tubes / tires and runs them in the windtunnel...

wouldn't that be something...

Aero Wheel Advantage for Age Group Triathletes
This article estimates how much time can be saved in sprint races by converting from stock aero wheels found on most tri bikes to more aero disk and composite spoked wheels.

I just picked up an S60/60 combo after tons of debating with myself over S60/80 vs 60/60.  I have IM Austin Sunday Ill report on the time savings or how they feel to me.   The only issue the last 56miler I did was Branson and it had 5k feet of climbing, so I am not sure that will be a great comparison.  That took me exactly 3 hours, so we'll see.

I basically went with the S60 cause it appears to be a great all around wheel.   Where I ride most of the time wind is a minimum of 15 mph in Oklahoma, so I did not feel like getting blown around when I was out for leisurely ride.

I live in the northern Texas panhandle. Lots of wind here too. I was basically set to go 80/80 til you came along. HA!

New subject.

What recommendations for tires and tubes? I'll probably just order online. For tubes, I'll need something that can fit with the new wheels or valve extensions? For tires, I'm looking for a good tire for everyday training as well as racing.

I'm close to getting a really nice setup.

Thanks again!!

I know what you mean by wind.  I live 20 miles west of Oklahoma City.  When they say where the wind comes sweeping down the plain is no joke.  I rarely get to ride in sub 15mph.  It is nothing to get 25-30mph gust on a regular day.  I talked at length to a very trusted bike shop here, and they recommended this particular wheel since I do not plan on changing then from races to training rides.  The basically said everything you read on aero on the web, but for the majority of my riding this set up would probably best serve me day to day.
