I am really considering racing in the Racine 70.3 ironman next year. I've done 4 or 5 smaller triathlon events but i would really like to take it to the next level.    Is this a good course to start my ironman career on? How is the course......especially the swim?  Any information on the event would be excellent

I thought it was a great first-HIM course. The swim this year was pretty easy, not too cold, no current. The bike has some significant rollers but nothing you'd call a real hill. Run was very straightforward two loops. It's a nice town.

I also think its a great course, and fairly flat on the biking and running course with good spectating especially on the run. I'm thinking about doing it for a third time again next year (did it once as Spirit of Racine and last year as the official 70.3).

I will disagree with the temp of the lake though - I thought it was FREEZING. I regularly swim in Lake Michigan near Chicago and the water at Racine was cold - maybe 60 degrees? I got used to it after a few minutes and all was well, but it shocked me in the beginning. You just never know with Lake Michigan.

I did Racine 70.3 last year and will do it again this year.  The course is not difficult, but not particularly exciting either.  Seems like a good first HIM and you get all the IM branded hoopla.  The water is a crapshoot.  I thought it was fairly cold (announced temp was 62F), but once  I got going it was fine.  Reasonable chop, but it did pick up for those of us in the latter waves.  I lived on Lake Michigan in Racine for 5 years and it was different every day--sometimes nice and calm and sometimes 6 foot waves.  If you can handle either, you will be fine.

I've already signed up for Racine it will be my first 1/2 IM. 2010 was my first Tri Season I did 4 and I am hooked I'm working on my training plan and goals right now. Is there anything unusual with the transition areas or distances to and from transition?

I've done the race for 3 years and liked it.

1). You have to walk the beach to get to the swim start.
2). You start in waves every 3 minutes.
3). Lake Michigan is usually under 67 degrees.  Brrrrrrr.
4). Point-to-point swim.
5). Run on the loose sand for about 100 yards or better to T1 (can you say cramps? ).
6). Very fast and flat bike course.  There's this "hill" that is just after the start, so make sure the bike is in low gear as you mount.
7). Run is flat, 'cept for the nice climb after the first 1/2 mile and then again on the second loop.

When IM bought the rights last year, the price did go up tremendously, though.  I didn't race it last year due to a non-training year with enjoying family time, and the cost.

I think you'll like it.

I'll just chime in with the same thing everyone else said...I did Racine a few years ago. Great 1st HIM course. The swim was FREEZING that year (like low 50's). If you are nervous about the swim, it was shallow enough to walk through (people were doing this). Bike was nice and fairly flat, even spectators through the ride. Run was a two loop course.

You won't be doing that anymore. The course is now full length and the water is prolly more than 20 feet deep at the bouys.

Thanks

Not in the past, but I suppose there is a cut-off now that IM has bought it out.

I've though about doing this but I heard that the roads for the bike ride were in terrible condition. They said they weren't necessarily bumpy but that they were rough and basically vibrated the bike to the point where some people were hating it... Anybody know anything about this...

Sounds like you need a new bike that rides smoother.

I won't say every section was perfect, but roads were good.  I wouldn't be concerned about that.  Its a fast course.   I've never had a tri where the roads were all perfectly smooth.  Perhaps Branson was  but I was too busy dealing with the MOUNTAINS  to be all that concerned about the road surface itself.

My memory of Racine is that I can't wait to go faster next year on that course.   No worries.

Or ride more.

Yes, the roads are not very smooth and there are a lot of "bad spots" on the bike course.  Just make sure you have a cage that holds your water bottles in well so they don't go flying off (there's usually a couple of really good spots where you see this carnage of water bottles, gu, and such), and if you use an aero bottle, make sure to keep the "brillo pad looking-thingy/squishy/whatever" in place with a rubberband or use a different cover.
If you can afford a more comfortable seat, then go for it, but, riding more will help a little.

another really good thing about Racine is that you can see the bottom on the swim and it is sand.

I did Augusta as well this year and the swim is in the muddy river with weeds and darkness. Who knows what is down there? It's a lot easier to keep your heart rate down if you can actually see that the Creature from the Black Lagoon isn't about to have you for breakfast.

Of course I did swim twenty minutes (!) faster at Augusta because it's all downriver...

As for walking the Racine swim, you can see videos of it on Youtube. Apparently they pulled the bouys closer to shore out of concern for fog a couple years ago. I think I read someone drowned at that beach during a different triathlon. I would be extremely concerned if I were surrounded by fog and couldn't see the buoy or the lifeguard...

Sprint_Dan.... If I wanted your opinion I would ask you personally.... But I wasn't asking you because I already know what you would say.... And I already have a new bike remember? Your the one that sold it to me so I guess if I end up hurting from the vibration on the road you either sold me a craptastic bike  or did a bad bike setup which means you'll b hearing from me  at the finish line because I'll be complaining to you hahaha... I was just asking the locals or people that have done it and I've had mixed answers come back...

The first 5 or so miles to and from transition are the only bad spots. It was creases in the road that were very annoying on the way back. Not too bad on the way out but thats because of the 46 miles in between lol.

...

Not this past year, but '08 and '09 they did that - they brought the buoys in to shorten up the swim course, and everyone could touch bottom (there were a lot of "swoggers"/"jimmers").  In '08, because of the drowning at a different race and wanting to play it safe, they brought the buoys in but didn't extend the length to make the swim the legit distance.  In '09 they brought in the buoys again because of the dense fog.  In '07, I don't remember seeing the sand bottom when making it out to the deeper portion of the course.
