Subject: BQ Qualifying Time Question
I am turning 39 this upcoming January and will be running a marathon in April of 2011 when I am 39. I am wondering if my time needs to be a 3:15:59 or less, or does it need to be 3:20:59 or less as, if (and that's a HUGE if), I qualify I will not be running Boston until 2012 when I will be 40 years old.

I think that a qualifying run time is good for 18 months if I am not mistaken so I would actually be 40 on the start of the Boston race day although I will be 39 when I run the qualifier.

Am I making any sense here?

I guess I am asking does one have to run the qualifying time in the age group that they will be racing at the time of Boston or if you run a qualifier in one age group, it is only good for that age group, even if you switch age groups a few months later before Boston's race day.

I know, that's pretty confusing, sorry about that!

Thanks for any help if you can figure out my question!

From the website:

The qualifying times below are based upon each athlete's age on the date of the Boston Marathon in which they are participating.

The way I read it is the day of Boston and no the day of your qual race. I've run Boston but have never been 'on the bubble' like you so never had to wonder. I agree that it gives me enough pause that I would email the BAA and ask them to be 100% sure. In my experience, it takes the BAA quite a while to return emails. Good luck in your BQ effort. It's a lot of fun if you get good weather.

Your time to qualify is based on your age on the day of Boston.  If you are 39 now but will be 40 on Patriot's Day (race day) then you only need to qualify as a 40-44 and not a 35-39 year old.  BAA is very clear about this.
Enjoy Boston.  It is a true spectacle!

^^ This.  I was in that situation a year ago...39 but looking to qualify for 2011 when I would be 50, so I was asking the same thing then.  (Didn't make a qualifying attempt then, though...did just qualify yesterday...sitting here at 5:35am on the West Coast waiting for registration to open online in 25 minutes or so.)

LOL...I wish.

(I was looking at the OP's age in his quote as I typed, it seems.)

You just qualified for Boston yesterday?!?!??!?! AWESOME job! Congrats! What an accomplishment!

I will probably try to next Spring depending on health and train-up, I'll see how it goes.

Definitely a life-time goal of mine, esp as I am from Vermont and my wife is from just North of Boston.

Thank you everyone for your help. I had tried to figure it out on the website but could not. Greatly appreciate all your help!
