Run
  • 3h 25m 32s
  • 26.2 miles
  • 07m 50s  min/mile
Comments:

wanted to run around 3:20, since I can not do Boston until 2012 I needed to run a 3:30 to BQ. I ran right around the 3:20 pace group all the way to mile 20. From 11.5 miles to mile 19 is all up hill, not steep, but a gradual incline the whole way. My thights really started to get tight by the time I reached mile 19. I was able to hold pace but the inclines had taken a lot out of me. I just could not pick the pace back up to 7:35 once I fell to around 8 minutes. I hung around that pace up until mile 23.5 where I started to really tighten up. Since I knew I had a Boston Qualifing time wrapped up, I made sure I walked through the aid stations and drank as much gatorade as possible, the last thing I need to have happen would be being forced to walk or worst and miss the 3:30 cut off. I will have to say the last 3 miles, has to be the worst pain I have experienced running. I made it home in under 3:30 and will be going to Boston in 2012 on my first attempt. I used 3 powergels and 6-endurolytes as fuel.
What would you do differently?:

nothing different, maybe do more powertraining for the inclines.
Post race
Warm down:

stumbled to the food area laided down put my feet up on a chair and delt with the leg pain for awhile.

What limited your ability to perform faster:

not sure, maybe needed a little more hydration.

Event comments:

A really nice marathon, need to organize the corrals better, I just made it in the back of corral #1 as the gun went off. I could not get through the people on the streets to get to the corral openning in time. It took 20 minutes for me to go 1 block. Course was nice, well supported fans and hydration and great finish area and goodies.

Wow, awesome job! That is some amazing speed. So, up there in that kind of pace, are the streets still filled with runners? Or are there just not that many people doing that pace?

Congrats on the BQ on your first try! Wow!

With the corrals, I kept hearing that from people. I don't know... when I showed up, they weren't letting people in them yet, and they said to just walk up the sidewalk until you were alongside the correct one. Which I did. When they opened them up a few minutes later, I got right in.  Maybe it's because I came from the east - I had parked well east of the starting area. Seems like people who came from west and north had trouble getting through the crowds.

Great race and way to BQ on your first try. My goal is for the 2012 Boston too.
