I posted this in the Illinois section but figured I'd also post it here.  Are any of you running this?  I am existed for this event as it will be my first 50 mile run in a timed event, and my first 50 mile run on cement.  Not really looking forward to running on cement for that long, so any words of wisdom would be appreciated on that part of the run.

"I am existed" Well, since you are THAT committed, it should be great!

jk.

I ran the Nashville 50 Miler last year that was 100% paved and, it REALLY started to hurt after about 43 miles.

Not sure how to prepare for that except mentally to be strong and to work walk breaks into your running. Walk breaks will allow difefrent muscle use and less continious pounding on the joints.

I also popped some Vitamin "I" (ibuprofen) during the run and it truly made a difference.

Excited for your first 50 miler!

When I was living in Chicago all my runs were done on that part of the lakefront trail and was also running there during that 50 Miler. It is asphalt, slightly better for your knees than concrete and there's a gravel strip next to it, you can run on it as well.
You will be doing loops and the trail will be open to normal traffic (at least it was when I was there). Not many spectators and the stations were further apart than in a regular marathon.
Watch out for the turnaround points as they were marked in chalk (hopefully it won't rain...) and kind of confusing (the same trail for few distances).

Good luck there!

I hope you did well at the race.  I could not run it this year but I hope too next year.  I done the 50k part twice and 50 miler once.

Great race, I recommend it to anyone in the Chicago area or those willing to make the trek to Chicago.  Great volunteers and CHUG seems to be a neat Ultra running group.  The race went good for me as I didn't have any physical problems affect me during my run.  I'm glad this race was very well organized and have great volunteers since without them I don't think I would have made it.  I ran on the gravel/grass most of the race so the actual pavement wasn't as big of an issue as I thought.  I finished in just over 8 hour, which I am happy with. Look for to this event next year, and getting to know those who run it as well.

Congratulations Kevin,  8 hours is an awesome time for a 50 mile race and even more so for the first one.  Got anything else planned?

Thank you sir! I had a great time and looking to do more "organized" ultra runs in the future.  As of right now I have nothing planned as far as races are concerned.  I still plan on doing at least one 50 mile run a month as part of my tri training though, just not in a structure race format.  I'm still open to hear what races are coming up though as I have a lot of vacation time I need to use before the year is up.  Thanks for the kind words and good luck to you with your running.
