Luby, I love your answer, "Slow, very slow..... but i Finish !!!!"

I still don't blame the OP for requesting people's times, I'm curious about that myself. An idea of expectations going in is a must for someone (like myself) who can't turn off the competitive switch.

Congratulations on the results, folks. Simply outstanding!!!

I would say only that your time in a race is real likely to be determined by the amount of effort that you put into your training.  On the bike, equipment will make a difference, but time in the saddle with a real plan that improves speed/efficiency will help even more.  I dropped from 255 to 225 last year en route to a 140.6 race and raced Clyde at a 70.3.  This year I'll be looking for sub 5 hours at 70.3 and race AG as it would put me in top 10%.  My point in sharing that is that I used to think of my size as a limiting factor (6'4" and 225 race weight now), but I have learned that it was more of a mental limitation to racing hard and keeping up with the little skinny folk than it is physical.  I'll not likely win, but I can be very competitive.  Good luck and great racing.

The cheapest way to go faster is to shed weight.  If you can drop 10% of your body weight, you'll see far greater results than if you spent thousands of dollars on a fancy pants bike.

A buddy dubbed me Bumble Bee.  He said a bumble bee has a big body and should not be able to fly.

He said that applied to me on a bike.

A year ago I did my first time trial.  They had us line up by anticipated average speed for a hilly course.

I was in the 22-24 mph group and the only one not in team kit.  When I was on the start ramp, the announcer, over the loud speaker, asked me if I knew I was in the wrong group.

As Phil Legget would say, I turned the pedals in anger.  I WAS in the right group.

Speed is highly dependent on distance and hilliness.  In pro cycling, the big guys do well as sprinters.

Keep working at it and you will get faster.

I read this the other day and had to find it again.

Nov, 2009 (~220 lbs):

Nov, 2010 (~190 lbs):

I am 6' 4" and assumed I was always to be over 200. I have gotten down to 205 but that was about it. I am going to enter my first olympic tri in July and the goal is to not be eligible for Clyd. I am around 208 now. Thank you for the inspiration.

Those who are logging in 4k-5K mi per year, are you guys riding year around or just season starts early/ends late? Also how many rides are you guys doing/weekly?

This is my first training year and with oncoming of spring, I am trying to set a plan for next 7months (or until its back under 50degrees).  Closest paved/shared trail is about 20mi away so its tough to squeeze out rides during the week. With a weekly average, annual mileage will be too low. Any way to work around these issues?

Thanks

I ride all year and usually 5 - 7 days a week with 4 days fairly intense training, 1 -2 easy spins to loosen up the legs with less pounding.

Since I live in Minnesota (today, March 24, it is 9 degrees f. in the morning), I do a lot of time on the indoor trainer, spin class, and computrainer class.  I was told to get faster, you need to log sadle time.  I vary the training throughout the week.  The time on the bike seems to have helped my average times last year.

I'm in the Midwest and ride a trainer in my basement in the winter (3x weekly) and CompuTrainer rides at the bike shop one day per week.  I did an IM last fall, and trained 6 months for it.  Hadn't been on a bike in years before that.  If your question is, will you be alright?  The answer is yes if you start putting in the miles NOW.  You can't wait much longer.
