Subject: Winter running traction gear
Hi,

I posted this in gear but no one was able to help. There was ice on my deck this morning so it's time for me to go buy some foot traction for running.

Has anyone here used 1 or more of the following shoe grips? Let me know what you think - especially if you can compare some of them. I need as much traction as I can get!

So far I have heard that yaktrax is great but they break down quickly.

I slip easily on unexpected and known icy patches when walking, and I hope to run this winter.

Thanks for your help!

I lived in IL for years and ran with Yaktraks, love them.  They work great on ice, even on a flat driveway covered in ice...in case you need them to go get the mail. The only issue is you can feel the spring coils at the bottom of your shoe, which isn't bad just a little wierd.  If you run outside, which I did all winter long in IL, it is best to use trail shoes vs normal running shoes. Besides being water proof, they have better ankle support and a toe protector in case your front foot runs into chunks of ice.  With Yaktraks, you can run 85% -90% normal on ice, but don't really want to do any speed work.  Also, if you run into roads that don't have any snow or ice, they seem to last with no issues, just a little loud and you won't get your "spring" from your shoe..because they like to stick to asphalt.  I would run with my trail shoes and bring the Yaktraks with me in case the road get bad.  Or, I would wait until it snowed and they work great.  The major issue with winter running is not falling, using Yaktrax, but landing into a hole you didn't see or was covered and twisting an ankle.

I have the Yaktracks and they do the job just fine.

I was wondering about this, too. I have YakTrax but haven't used them yet. It will be my first winter running outside. Everyone I've asked at my Running Room have recommended YakTrax over the other ones they sell there.

I've also read some people take a pair of shoes and put in some sheet screws form the hardware store.

I use these:

Much less expensive and longer lasting. I get the screws at Lowes or Home Depot for less than $2 per shoe. I've been using the same pair of shoes for icy conditions for the past 5 years and have worn them to race in as well.

The only winter condition they don't seem to work well for is very deep fluffy snow.
