Has any one ever raced the Rocky Racoon 100mile in Texas? I have completed 2 Ironman races and a 24 hour adventure race, but my training has gone down hill the last year. I saw this race and it just looks like a fun challenge. I will only have 3 months to train, I have 29 hours to run/walk across the finishline. I have always been able to run long distances with very litttle training. Have I completely lost my mind?

I have; sort-of.

Did the 50-miler 9:51 in 2009 and ran the 100 this year, but DNF'd after mile 80 at 23 hours. It's a long story (check out my RRs) but I was sick going into the race and I ran out of energy. It's hard to describe, but even though a 100 miles is twice as far as 50, it's 4 times harder. I've done ARs and an IM; 100 miles is harder.

The race organization is top-notch, the course is challenging with mild hills and lots of roots and rocks, but it's not a killer. The aid stations are staffed with trail running clubs and they know how to take care of trail runners. Weather is a toss-up. In '09 it was 80 degrees, this year was freezing temps at night.

If you have a decent base, 3 months is plenty because cardio is not the limiter; it's the constant pounding your muscles take and keeping your nutrition and fluids under control that is the key to success.

I did it in '08 and will say x2 on everything jkron said! It is a great event! The volunteers are excellent and the racers are just as nice. I love the ultra community. Like jkron said, the weather is a toss-up, you just never know what Texas is going to do in February. I did it the 08 year in a tank top and shorts the entire time and those from up north REALLY struggled with the 'heat' during the day. A hundred miles IS hard. I've done Ironman, double IM, triple IM, 24 hour bike race, and that 100 hurt! It's just so much pounding on your body. Of course, I also fell at mile TWO and thought I about broke my knee cap in two on a root...never lose concentration out there!! But at the same time, it was so awesome too! I definitely say go for it!!

Well, I don't know about tougher. They are both tough in their own right. It's really like comparing apples to oranges. I'm a much better cyclist than I am runner so that aided me in the triple even though it was a longer event.
