Katy, Texas

Sunny
Total Time = 1h 18m 34s
Overall Rank = 46?/533
Age Group = Clydsdale
Age Group Rank = 2/32
Pre-race routine:

Woke up at 4:15 and had a banana and some cheerios. Loaded up the bikes (my wife raced today) and got to transition early. We had two friends who were racing this race as their first triathlon so we wanted to be done early so we could help them.

Put a ? on the overall rank since Clydsdale don't ever seem to get included in the overall rank
Event warmup:

Went four about a one mile warm run with some pickups and then waited around for a long time. We were the last wave to go. Watched my wife (who does not like open water was very nervous knock out a great swim and had the 7th fastest swim in her group) have a great swim. By the way she place 4th in W30-34.
Swim
  • 09m 2s
  • 547 yards
  • 01m 39s / 100 yards
Comments:

I had a great swim. Not used to being out of the water at the front, but I know Jason(friend racing) would be out fast and I was going to have to chase him all day. Jason swam 7:39. I need leasons from him.
What would you do differently?:

Swim faster
Transition 1
  • 01m 16s
Comments:

Overall pretty good. Lost some time here as the wetsuit strippers wasted about 15 secs trying to get the suit around my heals.
Bike
  • 44m 57s
  • 16 miles
  • 21.36 mile/hr
Comments:

Good bike ride overall. Did have to slow down has I was approaching the I-10 crossing since the cop had the bikes stopped and was letting traffic go. Seems to be a common theme recently at races. Luckily I didn't have to stop just started to slow down and then he let the bike go. Also had an ambulance that was parked on the side (a biker was hit by a truck during the race) pull out to you turn in front of me and the people behind me. There was a lot of sliding and squeling tires and yelling, but everyone made it ok. About a 1/2 mile to the turnaround I saw Jason and realized that I would probably have to catch him on the run if it was possible.
What would you do differently?:

Ride harder. I hadn't been riding my bike much since Age Groups.
Transition 2
  • 53m
Comments:

This was a great transition, probably my best T2 yet.
Run
  • 22m 23s
  • 3 miles
  • 07m 28s  min/mile
Comments:

My best run yet. I saw Jason leaving T2 has I was coming down the road to transition and figured he was in 1st and it was going to be a tough run to catch him. My goal all week had been to just run a my first sub 8 and I Jason had stated the same, so I thought if I have a great run just maybe, maybe I might have a chance. No such luck, I ran a 7:28 ( really excited about it) but Jason ran a 7:18. Great run though
What would you do differently?:

Keep losing some weight
Post race
Warm down:

Hung around and waited for my wife to finish. Checked out the results and talked with everyone. Was pleased to see that with our times Jason and I would have finished 3rd and 4th in the M30-34 age group.

Great race to finish of the season and now begins the long and focused Ironman Texas training!
