Subject: Apparently I DO need strength training...

I visited the sports doc today after living with shoulder pain all season.  It turns out that my bicep is the problem and that all of the work I have done on my back muscles (swimming) and being hunched over (biking, running) has caused the problem.  I am starting work with a PT in a few weeks and will be doing strength exercises from now on.

While this won't improve my performance directly, it turned out that I probably should have worked on being a more well-rounded athlete.  Fortunately I can keep doing what I am doing (training), which is great.  Something to keep in mind!

Yeah, I think there are lucky individuals that somehow never end up with a muscle inbalance but I think if you put in any kind of volume in your schedule I feel the odds are too high not to include some kind of strength training.  I ended up in a similiar situation with my hip.  I'll never drop strength training again.

...added bonus - biceps training will help with the arm propulsion in the run!

At the very least, my arms will look good while running

Look around for a personal trainer who is NASM certified. The key to their PT certification is working with people on their muscle imbalances, as it cause injury when those are present.

you could probably skip all the workout (weights) bicep stuff and get a ultimate pull up bar instead.

If you have a specific problem to address and are working with someone who can help you focus properly on that issue, by all means you should use ST.  However, as a prophylactic measure for that purpose, it does not work as well since you can't be sure what problem you are hoping to address.

Many people work on their swimming and are "hunched over" on their bikes (if you are hunched over running, THAT could be a source of a problem) without developing any bicep issue.  Something to keep in mind!
