Subject: I have to travel from Minneapolis to Montreal what route?
I have to travel from Minneapolis to Montreal last minute.  I am trying to figure out what the best route is.  I could fly, but it looks like it's a $900-1300 flight and I'm not feeling that rich right now, especially since there is two of us.  I can drive and take the northern route, accross Wisconsin, the UP, into Canada in Sault ste. Marie through Ottawa to Montreal or the Southern Route through Chicago, across Michigan enter Canada at Port Huron through Toronto and on to Montreal.  I'm not affraid of the distance just wondering what the drive is like.  Any experiance?

Can't help you with a route but remember, the longer you stay (distance traveled) in the US the cheaper your gas bill will be.

Here's some Google Mapping for you:

Route 1 - 1,154 mi, 21 hours 56 mins.  I-90/94 to Milwaukee and across Lake Michigan on the car ferry:

I think the car ferry is done for the season and it's hard to time, and the other two are the ones I'm thinking of.  Any comments on the routes?  Are they nice drives, boring, slow, fast, etc.  I like driving through Chicago so that's not a concern.

I'm familiar with parts of your routes. I live in the Ottawa area and regularly attend a music festival just north of Muskegan, MI

The northern route: The highway from Sault Ste Marie is in good shape but is only two lane. So it may be a bit slower if you get behind a truck. Very little urban area, the scenery is mostly rocks and trees. I like that drive personally as long as you aren't in a huge hurry. Once you get to the Arnprior Ontario area, the highway becomes a 4 lane. Traffic through Ottawa is not bad except for some congestion at rush hour.

The southern route: The highways between Grand Rapids and Port Huron MI are in pretty rough shape. Once you get into Ontario at Sarnia, the roads are very good and all 4 lane to Montreal. Traffic through Toronto can be pretty bad at times.

Hope that helps.

Hwy 8 through Northern WI is a pretty ride (and probably at post-prime Autumnal foliage color), but mostly 2 lanes and zoned 55 mph.  You can cruise through doing 60-62, but there could be county mounties or State Patrol designated at rare times.

If you are more in a hurry, take the route to Chicago (maybe take the I-290 then to I-294 bypass to Lansing, then back to I-94).

Weather is sucky right now, though, with the forecast calling for rain and high winds for the next day or so.

Have a safe trip.

Do the Port Huron! Seriously, although Northern Ontario is lovely with the south route you'll be able to be on divided highway the entire time (at least on the Canadian side) with nearly no chance of encountering moose. Coming through Toronto will be nightmarish to annoying depending on the time of day -  there is a toll highway to skip you north of the city which is still busy at rush time but less so than the 401.

Lots of options for stops and rests - though on my last go through the actual rest stops in Eastern Ontario were under construction.

The drive from Port Huron to Ottawa (err, maybe 1 hour before ottawa) is very boring.

The drive from Sault to Sudbury is a little better.

The drive around and just south of Sudbury is beautiful, so I assume from Sudbury to Ottawa is equally nice.

Oh, fill up your gas in the Sault and in Sudbury, especially if driving at night.

Chicago -> Detroit -> Montreal isn't a bad drive, the traffic isn't horrible in any of those places, except when your getting close to downtown Chicago.

I've driven around both sides of Lake Superior and I'd pick the northern route in a heartbeat, concerning mostly scenery.  But I have never been past Sault Ste Marie.

We do the drive around lake Michigan often. Chicago can take 2 hours to get around (from N suburbs past NW Indiana) or it can take 4 hours. The scenery sucks and the roads are worse. Do the North route if there doesn't look to be much chance of snow.
