RedShark - 2010-10-28 9:52 AM I love baseball but there it does not have the most strategy.

Football by far has the most strategy & big play decisions.

Baseball you have to do the double switch - and only in one league and then what - decide to steal or bunt?

Nope - I would take football or hockey before baseball BUT above basketball.
Don't take this personally, but you are NUTS! Football (which I love) is memorizing plays. Baseball is a game of situations. I could spend hours on this, but no time. The World Series is calling! Go Giants!

You're right.  What could be more complicated than "This guy pulls the ball so we move to the left"?

Oh, I dunno, maybe something like this.  For example, this guy is a righty and pulls the ball, so we'll pitch him outside.  Although there's only one man out, and the score is tied, and it's the 9th inning, and he likes to bunt down the first base line, so maybe we don't want to pitch him outside and maybe get the winning run into scoring position.  And he's batting .400 off the guy we have on the mound right now, but the next guy is only batting .100 off him, and we've got the pitcher's spot leading off the top of the inning, so we might need to pull him anyway.  But, the next three guys are lefties, and all we have in the bullpen available to pitch are righties, since the game went 12 innings last night and all of our righties are unavailable.  So maybe we leave him.  Then again, maybe we do let him bunt the runner over to second, then we can just intentionally walk the next guy so we have a force out for the next guy.

I *think* that's a little more complicated.

Football is memorization (that is why they cal it a play book). Baseball is reaction. Sorry, but baseball has so many more situatiosn that can occur during a game than football.

The thing that bugs me the most is, with all the money that's made in the sport, nobody has a decent pair of batting gloves. What the hell? They have to readjust them after every pitch. If I could invent a pair of gloves that stay securely fastened and properly adjust for more than a 20 seconds I'd make a fortune!

Isn't that the truth!  There's also plenty of money is in the supply of bubble gun, chewing tobacco, and sunflower seeds.  I could send my kids to college on the money I'd make selling seeds to Raul Ibanez.

...HGH to over half the league. (just finished that sentence a little differently)

I appreciate baseball for the joy it gave me as a boy.  To say that it's "better" than any other sport, I can't say that.  More complex than football?  I disagree.  Isn't this apples and oranges?

Yes, it is.  There are legitimate arguments, if that is the term, for both.  Someone else mentioned how football is memorization, and baseball is reaction.  I suppose that's true sometimes... but in baseball, for example, managers like Tony LaRussa were famous for poring over huge notebooks filled with percentages.  This batter gets a hit 15% of the time against this pitcher, etc.

That part of the game isn't necessarily all that interesting to me.  Both sports have situations where one needs to do things "by the book," and both situations where it's not quite as clear.

...and another thing, what's so great about a sport where a offensive player only has to be successful 1/3 of the time to be considered good. How long would a quarterback last who had a 30% completion percentage?

Also, too, and one other thing; how do baseball players know what to do in all those situations? They learn (memorize) what to do. It's like if/then statements in programming. If x happens, then do y.

It really is apples and oranges, but I like The Bear's take on things.

HAHAHHA

The worst sport to watch on TV (according to an old Bill Cosby album I listened to as a kid) is golf.  "The guy hits the ball.. ok, you didn't want it... so then you go walking after it. The guy then hits the ball and then camera pans to a white ball in a light blue sky."

Agreed that football is a lot more complicated than baseball in terms of strategy.  The plays change weekly depending on the strengths and weaknesses of the opposing team.

Tosh.0 brought up a good point about baseball.  He said it was great when there was a no-hitter.  Then you get to waste several hours of your life watching grown men play catch.

Oh, if I was not married and claim to have forgotten all shenanigans from before my wife.

I have to express my deepest and profound appreciation for the young ladies at Pitt and UC-Riverside in the mid-to-late '90's.  As well as the lax law enforcement in Daytona Beach and security and that dive hotel next to the Adam's Mark.

Yes, but 90% of what you had above is at the pitcher/batter level.  As an fielder, its relatively simple, the ball is hit to me, I catch it and throw it somewhere depending on the situation (i.e. 1-hopper to center, no one on, I throw it to 2nd to keep the guy pinned at 1st, etc).  Now I know that execution is key here, but in football there are a lot more variables.

QB before the snap:

What formation did the defense call to counter my 2 WR, 2 RB, I-formation with a TE on the right side of the line?  Are the CB's pinching up on my WR's or playing soft? Is the weakside CB thats eyeballing me extra hard lining up for a blitz or just messing with me? are the safety's shading towards one WR or the other?  Which LB package do they have in? The run stoppers? the extra-fast pass rushers?  Is the D-line overloaded on one side or the other of my O-line?  My TE is looking uncovered, should I audible him into a quick post route? etc.

A lot more moving parts before the play even begins....

I love baseball (in person), but my pet peeve ?with??????????? ?i?t? ?i?s? ?t?h?a?t? ?i?t? ?t?a?k?e?s? ?s?o? ?d?a?m?n? ?l?o?n?g? ?b?e?t?w?e?e?n? ??"?p?l?a?y?s??"?.? ? ??T?h?e? ????p?i?t?c?h?e?r? ?h?a?s? ?t?o? ?s?h?a?k?e? ?o?f? ?h?i?s? ?c?a?t?????????c?h?e?r? ?5? ?t?i?m?e?s?, the batter has to step out of the batters’ box 10 times to readjust everything, the manager has to come out for a 4 min pow wow every other batter.  Seriously, 3 rules would make this game 10x more watchable.

1)      a 15-20 second clock between pitches.  If the pitcher breaks it, a ball is added to the batters count.  If the batter isn’t set, a strike is added

2)      Once a batter is in the batters box, stepping out is a strike until the end of an at bat

3)      A manager gets a set number of “time outs” (which is what those mound conferences essentially are) per game.  You have a dozen coaches with you in the  dugout, make a decision in there…..

For anyone that has played or followed the game... lacrosse beats both of them on speed, endurance, strategy and creativity/reaction etc.

but since it is not hugely popular in 90% of the nation, even as it grows faster than any team sport in the US, it's hard to explain what you are missing out on.

and yes, I have played all three, but only football and lax at a reasonably competitive level.

in the complexity of the game issue, Football wins on total team situational awareness, but hitting a curveball remains one of the most difficult individual tasks in athletics.

Lacrosse is a fantastic sport. Every time I’ve watched a game with someone who didn’t grow up with the sport, they’re amazed that it’s not more popular. It was a way of life where I grew up. I knew more kids who played lax than who played baseball.
It’s easy to grasp (throw the ball in the other team’s goal), but endlessly complex. It’s fast paced like basketball, artistic like soccer, punishingly physical, and a game can be high-scoring or low scoring and still be exciting.

It is tough to watch for the layman though.
I tried watching a fraternity brother play, and without a TV announcer explaining, I had not idea what half of the whistles/stops in play were for.

MLB Average Runs per game (what I could find on a quick search)

20069.72
20059.18
20049.63
20039.46
20029.24
20019.55
200010.28
19989.58
19979.53
199610.07

So there is not NO scoring, just not as much.

So at an average of 2:45 minutes per game, we see a run about every 7 minutes.

Of which an average is probably not a valid measure, because it is probably innings of nothing... then a bunch of runs in a short period time.

What is the minutes per scratching 'roid shrunken huevos in comparison?

It's tough for me to get excited about a sport where a 0-0 final score could ever be considered a good game.

Startlingly, I am still awake during a discussion of basezzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.......

UH. wha! Oh. Yeah. Baseball. Talk about 'roid shrunken huevos. At least the soccer guys are all in really good shape and remove some clothing with regularity. 90 minutes of good playing and then you get a bit of semi-nakies. WAY better than baseball.

Overall though, I'd rather play a sport than watch it on tv.
