Elite  4235    Spring, TX |  Subject: How often do you get flats?Just curious how often people have to change their tubes while riding. I've met a lot of people and seen many here on BT who use Gatorskins or put in anti-flat strips and talk about flatting on a regular basis. I just don't understand. I started riding in 2007, and other than a couple flats in that very first year, I haven't had to change a tube during a ride in over 3 years. That's with normal race type tires as well. I realize I'm probably just pushing my luck, but I have a hard time understand the efforts people go through to avoid a flat. (I do practice changing tires a couple times a week. Every time I put the bike on the trainer I change out to a trainer tire and take it off afterwards) |

Do this every now and again, and watch where you are riding and things should be good to go...normally. I seriously think most flats are due to a poor rim strip or a pinch flat. |

I can go months or thousands of miles w/o a flat and then go thru 3 or 4 tubes in a short period of time. Overall, I'd have to guess about one flat every 2,235 miles...or there abouts. :-) ~Mike |

Based on my limited experience, flats shouldn't occur too often. At least not often enough to justify a gatorskin or something similar. |

You just jinxed yourself... last time I had a flat tire, I had run over a rock, and my tire went flat... while I was changing my tire, my friend had mentioned that he hadn't had a flat... about 10 minutes later, he got his 1st of 5 (yes 5) flats that day! On the 5th flat, he got SAGGED in... to answer your question, I've had about 3 or 4 flats since I started riding (almost 2 years)... each time it's been because of hazards on the road like glass or rocks... I did have bad RIM tape, but I got that taken care of right away. |

This year, I've had one due to riding over some microscopic (OK, not technically 'microscopic') bit of metal that took FOREVER (OK, not technically forever) to extract from my tire on the side of the road. However, I do have flat-resistant tires on my training wheels. I've got to have some tires on there, so why not? I do a lot of riding in the middle of pretty much nowhere. A bad-luck string of flats out there would be no fun at all. |

The second was a slow leak in mile 50 of my HIM this summer. Fortunately was able to ride that one in with a few bursts of air along the way. |
