Just some rough guesses based on my experience (these are sendoffs):

Not necessarily, I know a lot of swimmers (myself included) that could be considered “elite” by this standard. However, in an OWS, I can’t swim straight to save my own life and to be honest probably cover a quarter of the distance of any race going side to side. Take away clear water and the black line and you have a lot of what is defined above as MOP swimmers.

I thought the fact that I said rough guesses covered the fact that it wouldn't be true in every situation.  However, for further clarity, an athlete who can hold 1:10/100y sendoffs in the pool and has a little OW skill should be able to put up an elite swim split in most tris.

Sorry about that...

Here is another fun little fact to add to the mix.

Prior to the 2008 Olympics, the fastest send off that Michael Phelps went off at was 1:15 (for all strokes). The kicker, he did a set of 20 X 100's @ 2:00 and averaged around :50 seconds. The slowest being :53.6 and the fastest being :47.1. He is not a triathlete though. I got that from a USA Swimming Coaching class that I recently attended.

However, I would expect that Phelps was swimming in a 50m pool so his sendoffs would have been closer to 1:05/100y.

As well, since most of his events are <2:00 in duration, one would expect that his training would involve more recovery between sets than one would see for an endurance swimmer.

I will verify... I thought that it was SCY.

Actually it was SCY.

Really?  I would have expected him to be in a LC pool almost entirely.

I am almost 100% certain because I was thinking the same thing. He had longer Free only sessions that were LCM and two blistering fast IM sessions in meters.

I will verify when I get home as they gave us as a handout.

FWIW, in smaller races I'm usually first or second in my AG (M45-49) and usually around the top 10% in my AG in larger races.

When I'm in shape I can do 20x100M on 1:40, which translates to around 1:30 or 1:35 in yards I suppose.

I think I do better in OW many than others of similar pool swim ability simply because I practice in OW a bit more than most.
